Chips that increase horse power

Can someone explain how these chips work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

is it a total gimmic? I've heard about their being chips that boost horse power. I had no idea it was an ity bity resistor.

Where can you get the legit chips and is it worth it? Trying to find the cheapest things that boost horse power, perhaps a chip and new exhaust? I heard those 2 are some of the biggest gains (other then some crazy Nos.... heh).

Says who? Catback gains are minimal, on a 5.5 gen at least. Y pipe will get decent gains for the $, as will a decent intake/GAB <--cheapest (or at least, will help on the top end).

Those chips are a waste of $ (there are no "legit" chips I've heard of for a Max), IIRC even a CPU reprogram done by Technosquare didn't provide phenomenal gains for the price.

From the 4th Gen FAQs:

What are all these 20+ HP chips I see on ebay?

They are timing advance resistors. Basically, it tells your ecu that your intake is recieving colder air.

Do they work?

NO. The ECU only uses the air temp sensor as a reference to ensure that all it's primary readings are within range. Changing this resistance will not get any HP gains.

Don't even bother with them.

The only mod that will give ya a good gain short of forced induction is headers (if you have a 02-03) or a y-pipe (if you have an 00-01). There is a chip from Technosquare that raises your rev limiter, but that's really only useful if your car is already heavily modded, and plus its only for 02-03s I think. There is no "HP chip" for the Maxima, as far as I know. And a good free flowing cat-back will give ya about 3-5 whopping whp... so depending on what you're talkin about when ya say "exhaust", guess ya might have heard wrong....

thanks

Thanks guys really appreciate it. I'm just a rookie in the car mod world. I dont know what I'm talking about. But now I know better then to waste money on performance for my 2000 GLE Max. Which is good because now I'm getting rims...

They're not entirely worthless. You can still control air-flow and increase HP, but **only** if your entire air system (from intake all the way into exhaust) is completely redone. But that kind of a "chip" (I hate that slang) is really expensive and is specifically designed for tuning purposes.

Do you honestly think a 3 dollar mod is going to improve 20hp?

The worst is when people come up to you and ask you "hey dude, did you put a chip in it". It really drives me up the frigin wall, and I have to refrain from being an a$$.
