On the way back from Austin last night, my buddy in his VR6 wanted to play, this time I thought it was my territory, highway style. Well, we ran, and lets just say from 60mph to 120 he pulled on me every so slowly to half a car and thats it. At 120 he was not gaining. I am so ticked that he keeps beating me in such a lower hp car! My friend ran him also in his 97 SE, with a few mods, and he also lost I think by 1 car length. This GTI is bran new, 800 miles, STOCK! Ugggggg...don't make any sense!

Yeah, we were even when we started at 80 and he slowly pulled to about a full car length at 110 and then he couldn't pull on me anymore to 130 where we shut it down. Those GTIs are nice, if they weren't so small I might have got one. You got to remember they weigh a lot less than our cars, so that helps them out a lot.

I don't know, the weight difference doesn't appear to be very big, the GTI is listed at 3000lbs vs. 3200lbs for the 2000+ Max and your car is in between. I am suprised that the Golf can do so well given its much weaker hp/torque figures. Maybe VW underrates its engines?

VW is famous for that. Their current 1.8T is rated at 170 HP, but it's really 180.

i heard that VW unrates their engines. just like all the Japanese Companies w/ their 280hp gentleman agreement.

hey russ, 1/2 car length isn't very much, don't fret. But once he breaks in his car more, it might be more than 1/2 length.

like in some magazine i recently read, they said a brand new porsche 911 ran a 12.8 in the 1/4. after 40kmi, he ran a 12

Ya, and we have to be aware of the 1.8T cars. A chip and exhaust and look out!
