1 bolt to the FSTB is stipped, Help how do I change it

I noticed today that 1 bolt out of 3 is stripped on the left side of the Strut in the Engine Bay, how do I change them?

IS it safe to dive on only 2?

It certainly isn't the best thing to do... but it is probably safe enough to drive as long as you are going to replace the stripped out bolt soon.

How hard is it to replace the stipped bolt? Do you have to replace the whole plate or can you just replace the bolt.

FIRST: to replace the bolt, you will have to pull out the upper strut mount and get a new one (I actually have an extra one, so if you need it, PM me and you can have it for cheap). It is NOT advisable to drive around with one not bolted down, as these bolts are holding the top of your suspension on...

SECOND: read this thread carefully:

http://forums.maxima.org/showpost.ph...59&postcount=3

(very important considering your other thread on this subject)

How hard is it to take off? is that the plate on the top of the stut? The Nut stay stuck but the bolt just spins, and the bolt doesnt pull off. its just a little loose.

Is that ok? the other 2 are tight.

I would replace it. Having loose things on the suspension is never a good thing.

call a dealer and see how much they cost. I have one here that should work for you, but they might be really cheap at the dealer. The part you need is called the "strut mount bracket" and to install it you will have to take off the strut/spring assembly (using a spring compressor of course) and take off the cap nut.....if you don't know what I'm talking about, just have a shop do it...it's easy if you have the correct tools.

Don't forget to get new nuts for the top at the same time

1. That is waaay to expensive for just the front struts... there is another thread around discussing best/cheapest places to get Illuminas. Most people pay around $430 for all FOUR.

2. I hope you're not thinking just dropping the car on Progress springs with only Illuminas in the front... get all 4 struts replaced.

If ya can't unscrew it or pry it, ya may have to cut it using a Dremel or something.

Btw, how did ya strip the bolt up there? Was it because your nuts were overtorqued when ya installed the FSTB?

No idea what shipping is, but I would assume it would be no more than 5 bucks or so....I"m not making 2 trips to the post office......so here's the deal:

I'll give it to you for $25 shipped shipping normal. If you want it FAST (i.e. 2nd day air or something) you'll have to pay extra.

condition: the piece came off a junked car so it has some minor corrosion here and there, but nothing a little steel wool won't take off. The bolts are in perfect condition - no strippage AT ALL. I do NOT have the nuts that go on top - at least not all of them. I might be able to find 1 or 2 at most, but don't count on it.

Let me know and I'll send you my paypal address via PM if you want it.

a lil OT, but are the top hats from a 4th gen and 5th gen different? would they use the same bolt size? If so, mayb eyou can get that from a junkyard since it the bolt might be from the nissan parts bin...

edit: or i fyou have the patience, i would just go with irish then since it seems like a pretty decent price.

That leads me to believe that ya overtorqued those nuts when ya put in the FSTB... that's why the bolt got stripped after some driving....

The strut upper mount nuts should be tightened to 39-54 N-m.

siren... email or PM me your address, and I will burn you a copy of the CDROM for either the 2000/2001 or the 2002/2003 electronic service manual. it has all of the schematics you need and "how to's" for repair.
