2k maxima with ticking noise

I have noticed the past week that there is sometimes a ticking noise coming from sound like the passanger side under the hood. It happens when the car has been running then it is turned off. It last only 1-4 seconds. I don't have a ses light or anything.

man this car is the biggest POS, it makes so many noises. My brothers 98 escort with 200k miles on it does not sound this bad.

I am not a maxima enthusiast, its my moms car. I used to like them, they look nice and have a decent amount of power.
Its just that its had so many problems and the dealer is not very helpful about them. Had the car in for the pinging about 4 times, even told them once about the coils. Finnaly it got the ses light and they fixed them. It still pings from time to time.

I can't see how this is a "normal" problem. I mean its not like its a kia or anything. If I bought a bentley or something I wouldn't want it make that kinda noise.

What grade of ruel do you put in it? Work on your own car, saves money and keeps the factor down from the stealership. And with taht attitude, take yourself to Ma and Pa's dealership and pick up a 200k mile Escort, you'll save and wont have to worry about it like the Max.

jeez, number one, calm down..these noises are perfectly normal...it's just the throttle bypass valve shutting after turning off the ignition..even if the car isn't turned on (ie: turn the key to 'ACC') you can hear it opening up then shutting down again when you turn the key to the 'OFF' position...
i really don't think that just because a car pings, and makes noises after shutting off that are normal makes a car a POS....a POS is when a car takes 6 seconds to start when it's an '03 or something like that...i think you should just lighten up about it...my mom's 2k maxima really DOES have 200K miles on it and even the original auto tranny is still in good shape (besides the 1-2 slip when it's cold) ... i don't think a couple pinging noises would cause me to hate a car that has been so good otherwise....

I can't see how this noise is normal, I mean it is pretty loud. What the you said about the bypass valve sounds like it could be it. Is there anyway to fix that?

Check your PCV valve and if needed clean it or replace it. Maximas' 3.0L are generally send out PCV vapors with engine oil in them, even if you were to put 89 gas, these vapors are fed back for burning and degrade the gas resulting in pinging. The pings can be worse on 3.5L max's as the compression is much higher, resulting in more often opening of the valve to releive the excess pressure buildup.

Try using an oil catch condenser in the path of the PCV o/p and i/p back to the engine -- someone in this forum said that this had stopped the pinging, one thing with these condensers with baffles to catch the oil from the vapors is regular drain of the oil that is caught, which itself is a PIA. I don't like opening my hood every other week, if I had the condenser. Just not required, live with the low RPM pinging....

We have to be talking about something different

i only notice it whenever i think about it....i wouldn't have ever noticed it if it wasn't brought up on the .org .... the thing is doing it's job...stop being so picky about it, and leave it alone....a lot of cars make noises after they shut off..its just part of all the technological crap we have on our cars now....it's normal, therefore there's nothing you should worry about, therefore why are you whining like a baby about it??

It is a normal sound .. if you don't like it take it to the dealer and complain. The stealers know S$$t about maximas so they will screw you on something normal. Learn to live with it or get another car...... my .02

What I want to know is how come this noise just now started. THe driver and two of the passangers both heard it at the same time. This has not been doing this unless we all got better hearing at the same time.

If I had a way to record the sound I am almost certain this is different noise then what you guys are talking about. It does not do it every time but almost does. It sounds like a fan is spinning and hitting something. It all last for about 5 seconds, then it just stops. Even if someone else could record theirs making the same noise I would be happy.

I am not sure about that yet. I am thinking that might have something to do with it. I have tried turning the ac off then the car but it still does it. I am wanting to try running the car without the air at all then see if it does it. It seems to have started now that the a/c has been used.

I am going to have to look around on my own. I was just making sure that know body else had this problem before I go looking. If I find the problem I will reply back.

I had a noise also. If your talking about the Passenger side, and your car is in motion, it may possibly be your heat shield is touching against your rotors. Check it out it might be the problem. IF it is just jack up your car and take a screw driver and bend it out a little. The sound should go away.

I am pretty sure that it is the A/C. Now sometimes when the car is still running but when the a/c is cut off it does the same noise. The a/c has already gone out before but the dealer said it was because paper was in the fan. I know they won't fix this because they told me last time it is still working.

So does anyone know what could be going on? It sounds like a really loud fan slowing down then quiting.

edit: found the problem. One of the raditor fans is lose
