Intake Manifold Question

Okay, I know people have heard on the 2000 -2001 3.0 L maxima has an issue of breaking a small rod in the intake manifold taht directs air through the long port or through a short port! The question I have is that if I was to hold the valve open on the short port side will I lose or gain anything, will this also effect my gas milage?

I have a good amount of bolt on's like:
Cattman Header, U/O Pulley, lightweight Flywheel, Act Clutch and Short Shifter, Grounding kit!! Any other suggestions to gain some more ponies?

Peace

keeping the valve open greatly improves hp over the 5200 crossover but it does lower torque. a local member here in charlotte removed the valve which would be similar to keeping the valve open opened. he dynoed and picked up 15hp on the top end coming from a the broken valve but lost around the same in the torque department. he eventually fixed the rod and kept around 13 of the 15hp and got back all the torque. i would advise making sure it is functioned unless you just want to go for a high peak horsepower number on the dyno.

most people say the rod breaks but what they mean is the rod sits inside of a cup and it wears away. there are some pics floating around here, i think i might have one on my homepage but im not sure. the rod is made of plastic and i have not seen one that has broken but the cup wears away which is why people fill the bottom with jb weld to secure it.

just depends how much time the motor spends above 5k. i had 46k on mine when i took it apart and the cup was very close to breaking. there were shavings where it had been letting and it wobbled a little bit. i would say with moderate use @ 70k miles that you should definetely take a look at it.

This past weekend I opened the car and did the VIA maintenance. Thanks to the How-to it was a straight forward operation. The cup did have some slack on it and was moving freely about 1/4" on the shaft. I hope that JB will hold it for some time now. The tip in How-to to use Phillips #3 was excellent. Also there is no need to remove throttle body, one can just pull both cables and that will provide just enough room to get to the screw from underneath... Thanks to all for the tips! Fuel filter - here I come :-)
