I was racing with this guy yesterday on Ford Contour V6 5-speed. I have 2000 SE 5-speed, and as I went into second gear I started catching up to him, but I forgot to look at the tach , then it reached redline I felt in my throttle as something kicked back.

Do 5-speeds have some sort of protection against going over redline??

Yes, there is a throttle cut-off or something like that that will kick in. This happened to me once in my 95 Max SE, so I think it's been in the cars for years.

don't worry about it...

My motor hasn't exploded yet and i've, in numerous occasions, have redlined and bounced off the rev limiter. It's there to save the valves. Be thankful. and staying at 6200rpm isn't drastic either...unless 2 years down the road i need new valves... =X

Hmm, well i've gunned my car on 1.5 mile stretch to 125 and no further, and I had plenty of room to go, but wouldn't break 125. (A/T) BTW, you must be insane to push your car to WOT @ 3900 miles on your odo. Cold engine too. What you thought as brave could cost you dearly later on. Due to Micropolishing on engine components, it takes time for your piston rings to fully seat. Maybe I'm being a party pooper, but I'm a mechanic, and I didn't go WOT til 11,000 miles, now with 16,000 and after doing valve lash twice, it's a b****~!~!
Just watch out, don't want Maxima owners to lose their pride and joy.

Dang Monkeyness,
LOLZ, well I'm not doubting you or nothing, just saying what you asked for, which is "how fast have you gone"
Regardless, bragging about beating a car ain't "cool."
I'll see you at a repair shop soon when something does break or at the morgue. (No insulting, just hard facts from what I see everyday.)
Drive safe...

My favorite quote: "Drive safe."

put the cart in neutral and stomp on it
you tach will bounce up and down near redline (disclaimer: at least mine does)

i don't know if it is necessarily good to do this to your car but, then again i beleive the real redline is higher than the factory chip allows anyway. (doesn't a chip upgrade, among other things, raise the redline slightly?)
