You need to go the dealership and buy a new piece if it is broken. That would be the obvious thing to do.

first of all, 
and secondly, all you will need to do to get them working again is either go to the dealer or call Dave B. to see if he has it (this would be my first choice) then replace it yourself...i'm sure it won't be hard. if you use your common sense, you'll be able to figure out how to detatch the control assembly from the steering wheel, and presto!! you have radio controls again!

I think it is just a screw, you might have to remove a plastic cover, just go out and look.

i've been searching for about 45 min myself on the steering wheel radio controls. i don't have one and i want one!
i see on the opposite side of cruise control on my steering wheel a little cover that can probably be popped off for the radio control. my question is that i want to know if the dealership is the only place to buy this accessory?

I looked into this and this is what I came up with...
Yes you can, you just have to replace this:
- Steering wheel
- Steering wheel Clock Spring (I think thats what it is called)
- 01+ head unit
- new controls
I dont think it is worth it...

My switch is also worn out. I already have a replacement, but have yet to install it since it looks like the air bag needs to come out and I dare not touch that.

I dont think it would be that hard to fix if you can remove it. Just hook it up to a volt meter and a voltage source. you can feed in a voltage and check to see if you get an output from each switch. I am pretty sure that the buttons just arent making good contact with the switches inside. I bet you could clean it or ghetto rig the switches inside of the control unit.

I actually just replaced the controls on my '01 Max a couple of weeks ago.
First - buy the part. I purchased from Courtesy Nissan for about $60
The replacement doesn't take long, but it does require removal of the airbag module.
Tools needed: T30 Tamper-Resistant Torx screwdriver bit, Philips Screwdriver. The Torx bit is kind of hard to find; I found it on Amazon, but some hardware stores may sell it.
Steps:
1) Disconnect negative battery cable; wait 10 mins (no taking chances with the airbags!)
2) remove the plastic cover on the bottom of the steering wheel; disconnect the wiring connections -- I believe there are two connectors.
3) Remove the little plastic covers on the side of the steering wheel; using the T30 bit, remove the airbag unit screws.
4) Remove the airbag module -- it should easily pull out.
5) Replace the audio switch -- connections/screws are pretty obvious
6) Put everything back...
Despite some nervousness over removing the airbag, this was a pretty quick and easy job. Definitely worth the effort...

Thanks for the write up MerlotMax01. Guess I'll give this a try. Was originally planning to let the dealer do it. Did you actually disconnect your air bag from the harness, or does it just sit there attached as you unscrew your switch?

You do need to disconnect the air bag. The switch connects to the back of the airbag unit, and the wires aren't long enough to let you pull it out without disconnecting.
Next time I do something like this, I should remember to take some photos...

Crap, I was ready to do this, then I checked my service manual. MerlotMax01, has everything correct except that in the service manual it says to replace the bolts holding the airbag.
Doesn't mention that one could use threadlock?
Oh well, I'll just buy the damn bolts at the dealer.
The special bolts are coated with bonding agent. Do not
use old bolts after removal; replace with new ones.

Ok, just did this in the morning. Its really easy, takes like 30 mins max without rushing. I talked to the dealer, he said you dont need to repalce the bolts. He said I could use some threadlock if I wanted to, so that is what I did. I'll know tomorrow morning if the buttons fire up or not.

I can't help you with the pictures. As for your other questions, yes, you do need the Torx 30 screwdriver to get the airbag off. You can get an entire 1/4 inch drive torx bit set for less than $10. Threadlock is not required but you probably would not want the torx screws coming loose since they secure the airbag to the steering wheel. A lifetime supply of Threadlock can be had for less than $5.
One last thing, make sure you keep your battery disconnected the entire time you have the airbag disconnected...for safety reasons and to avoid getting an airbag warning light that will require a dealer reset.
