Help!! Bought MAF without realizing the ECM needed upgrading
Hi All,
Not knowing (I had read here of others replacing their's and assumed it was a do-it-yourself job) the ECM needed to be upgraded I bought the MAF and am now wondering if I can still install it and then get the upgrade later. Anyone have any info they could share? Thanks

you can do the ECU upgrade later... I have spoken to DaveB and he told me that the reprogramming is not neccesary.... but do it when you can.. just as a routine maintenance.... good luck

it is required by nissan. in the box with the maf there should be a letter from nissan saying that it is required to reprogram the ecm and it's recommended that you change your air filter as well. if it wasnt required there wouldn't be a several page TSB on it.
I bought a used MAF, car runs smoother now but still has its moments where it feels like the MAF is gonna go again. Is that a sign of the ECU needing to be corrected as well?

Its not really required if the car will still run after you put in your new MAF,recommended maybe.Im at about 52k and have all the classic symptoms of bad maf. Im going to replace mine myself and hope for good results, because i have lost too much power in the last 2-3 months. Then if that doesnt help i'll get it reprogrammed or checked for other issues.
I replaced my MAF 3-weeks ago and have been amazed at how much better the engine runs around town and especially on the highway. I called a local import repair shop before installing the MAF about the need for ECU reporgraming, and the shop said they just drop the MAFs in. I installed without reprogramming and now the engine power is back!
P.S. Got the MAF for $106 from one dealer, while another dealer wanted $650. The price difference reason? The $106 item was a section of the intake plenum with the MAF already installed; the $650 price was for the MAF sensor alone.

I only need the $106 part,i have a 2001...i saw that same thing with the really expensive MAF...theres already a whole 'nother thread about that from like 3 weeks ago
not sure if this is the spot for it... but I have a 2000 GLE ECU/ECM available. It's a rebuild that was guaranteed to work. I had it put in and it did work... 100%, but it didn't solve the problem (which was two fold... bad speed sensor and thermostat). Either way, i've kept my original ECU/ECM and looking to help someone else out. I paid $275 for but will part with it for the best reasonable offer i get... email enelius@yahoo.com if you are interested (or know somebody who would be)... thanks.... oh yeah... it's for a 2000 GLE w/o heated seats.
I replaced my MAF a month ago and my car has never run better. I was planning on having the ECU reflashed, but now I'll just hold off and maybe do as regular maintenance. I purchased mine from Dave B. for like $80. Best $80 I ever spent on my Max.
As I stated before I got a used one. The ECU now seemed to pick it up and reset itself. It is running so nice now. Would a newer MAF be even better? Is this because the program or part has changed? If so I'll order one from Courtesy Nissan
replaced MAF 6 months ago and car sputtered after restarting. took to dealer to "get and oil change" and when they drove the car, they obviously noticed the problem. They flashed for free as it only takes seconds. Cost me $19.99.
Just to shed a little more light on the situation:
If you have installed the new MassAirflow without the ECU re-program and obtained great results, you may have stumbled on it accidentally. If you read the TSB fully, after installing the new part it requires you to match your ECU part number with several numbers listed in the TSB. If yours is one of the ones listed, no re-programming is necessary.
So evidently not all ECU's will require re-programming in order to work properly with the new part. And of course they may all work just fine without it, but for some reason Nissan recommends this procedure for some.
