I suspect he was just eyeballing the gas gauge and saying that's x gallons gone and I'v driven this far and my mpg is y. However, as stated, the gas gauges aren't that accurate. It takes forever for mine to drop to 3/4 and when I hit 1/4 it drops like a stone.

It's not that we don't understand HOW to calculate mpg (hence the name...miles per gallon) it's just that you made it very unclear earlier as to how you were doing so, because you stated that you were at half a tank and getting so-and-so mpg...but if you were at half of a tank, how did you know how many gallons you had consumed at that moment? our gas gauges give very rough estimates on how much gas we have left, so if the gauge says 'exactly' half tank and you have a 20 gallon tank, you don't necessarily have exactly 10 gallons left...

EDIT: here is what i'm talking about:

and my bad, it was 1/4 tank left and you said you got 24....that is what we were questioning you about...if you had 1/4 tank left, how did you know how many gallons of fuel had already been consumed?
Easy .. let me explain what I meant by that. I took the miles driven regardless of the gas left on the tank. I took those miles and divided by the gallons I put on my car when I filled it up. I look at my gas gauge and it was right on top of the 1/4.... I don't care about that, only at the gallons at the print out from the gas station pump..... Will this help

so, before that tank, you had 1/4 of a tank left when you filled up...and you put xx number of gallons in....so when you got down to that same spot on your fuel gauge again, you simply used the same number of gallons you put in before? fair enough...it's not exactly accurate, but good for a ballpark estimate....that was the only thing i was confused about, and thanks for clearin' that up...

it all depends on the driving conditions...i am one of the FEW people on the .org that gets 30 mpg on a regular basis, but that is because i have a VERY light foot while driving ( i do occasionally take it to redline, but not all the time) and i live out in the country where pretty much everything is highway driving...there are no stoplights where you have to stop and go and stop and go..just open country roads....i also make sure everything on my car is properly maintained (ie: tire pressure, fuel filter, etc.) which helps my gas mileage...

Hi everyone.
I need some answers for my "problem" or my head will blow up.
I bought a 03 Max auto with 49K on it about a week ago from a dealer.
I left the dealership with full tank of gas and it last me about 250 miles, trip computer gives #s from 15-16.5 MPG's(city) no mater how i drive it. First few days i was driving it hard (shifting at 4.5K-5K rpm's) with a/c(95-100F tmp in Chicago). Today i tried to see how high the mpg could get driving like an old lady, this time no a/c, but no change. Even on the highway @65mph i didn't reach 17mpg.... I'm devas***ed, and i'm starting to think that ther's something wrong with engine.
Any ideas let me know PLEASE.
Thank You!

How do you maintain your fuel filter? I thought we had an in tank filter that never needed changing?

i get 400mi +-10mi out of 16gal of gas; that's 95% highway @ avg 75-80mph

I don't see what's so hard about calculating milage

I usually get 26-27 mpg. My driving is roughly 90% highway, 9 miles to work and then another 9 back. Thats at 81xxx miles on the car and a new k&n drop filter and new ngk plugs

Well I have had my car for about 5 weeks... Have gone through three tanks. I'm getting 23-24mpg with mixed driving. Very hard shifting, I usually shift between 4-6k rpms during regular driving, and do get the urge to redline at least once every other day. I think that is just amazing, I'm sure that if i start shifting at the 3k rpm range on a regular basis and keep it under 85 on the highway that I will get much better MPG. Coming from a Pathfinder that never gave me anything over 15mpg anything over 20mpg is a godsend for me.

FYI - I check mpg, by dividing the number of gallons put in by the number of miles driven. Not 100%, but good enough.

I am so mad. I think my car is the worst out here then. with my calculation, Im getting 225 miles on a full tank. Hm I think theres something seriously wrong with my car. I need serious help. Or maybe its just the fact that I had my AC on most of the time (this past week was really hot in Jersey). But still Im not even getting close to 21 and Im driving 60% highway 40% city

225 to a tank? Ouch, even with my heavy foot, I get about....300-320 miles to a tank, mixed driving. Strange thing is, I got less mpg when I had my stock 15" tires on. I got an additional 30-40 miles a tank swapping my tires to 235/40/18's. You might want to get your car checked out, i.e. filter, plugs, O2 sensor, etc.

and for those that are wondering, Im looking at the stickies right now to see. I dont have my SES light on so I guess its not the O2 sensors. Im about to see if cleaning my injectors, change fuel filter, and see the difference.

Guys, these MPG pages are worthless.
Each city is different and the driving conditions are different.

let me tell you why:
after bumming myself why i could only get 20mpg city and 22 on the highway I came to realize that every city is DIFFERENT.

When i decided to drive to upstate new york a few days ago, I got a whopping 26 mpg and I drove over 70. However, driving on the highway around here I could only get 22, wanna know why? Cause for one thing the highway has a lot more cars and it had me gassing and braking more. Ohh and btw, those people who live in cities with 1000 people dont count as a city where there is one traffic light in the whole town.

Driving in brooklyn I proudly get 21mpg. All these stories with 30mpg and how awsome my car is, well my longest trip from my house to the center of the city is 10-15 miles.

Edit: , I forgot the :P

One piece of advise to you would be to stop paying attention to what the computer says you are getting for mileage. The computer may be a handy little tool to refer to, but I would not take the information it gives as your 100% true mileage. As people have gone over (and over and over) in this thread, compute the mileage yourself by taking the number of miles driven and dividing by the number of gallons consumed.

Are we not allowed to say 'devastated' on the org?

I hate you guys... I only get 10-17 MPG. But in Honolulu, most people are just stuck in bumper to bumper traffic.
