I think you'll be fine with GR-2s and even HPs...

KYB's should be fine. However, I have been told they have a tendency to start to fade out a bit sooner than Tokikos. That comes from the mouth of my local performance shop friend, so I am just passing on what he said. His exact words were that they are a little less smooth than the Tokikos (in terms of rebound, not ride), and that the Tokikos last a little better.

I just put H&R's on with Tokiko Blues, and I am loving it. Anyhoo, for what its worth.

Either way you go, enjoy.

I've been riding on H&R's with KYB GR2's for the past 2+ years, 40K miles, and no problems so far. That includes some autocrossing, a couple track days, and the daily abuse from living on a dirt road. Adjustable dampers like Illuminas would've been nice, but like you, I was worried about cost. Instead I put that money towards better tires. But that's just been my experience. YMMV.

KYB GR-2 with H&Rs tend to be too stiff and annyoing in the city. On the highway though, its a lot of FUNNN.
I would go with the Illuminas just because its too stiff in the city, but if you dont live in a place with lots of pothole and bumps, you should be FINE with the GR-2. I have them on for about 60k and there are no problems, still strong.
