pretty sure the actual mileage is kept in the ECU...its only displayed in the gauge cluster

yup...it actually is stored in the gauge cluster itself, but also in the ECU to prevent odometer fraud...if you swap your gauge cluster, your mileage will still be the same...

I will have to disagree with you on this one. With that logic if you do an ecu swap, the indicated mileage would change which is simply not the case.
I have done three ecu swaps with both 4th and 5th gens and there was no affect on the displayed cluster mileage.
I have also swapped an 03 cluster into my 98 with no change in the original mileage that was indicated on the cluster.
I talked with a tech at the local dealer and he said that when they order replacement clusters, they have to specify the mileage.

that's why i said the information was stored in both places....i remember reading that several times on the .org a while back....although i may be wrong, your post doesn't prove me to be...i'd be interested in knowing what was right/wrong on this topic because obviously there are some conflicting stories...

I really wanted a SE cluster in my GXE, and now my mileage reads like 65K miles, but in reality I have almost 120K miles on my GXE. Nothing in the car stores mileage other than the small processor on the gague cluster printed circuit board. Even if you disconnect your battery and leave the cluster disconnected for 100 years, the mileage will still read the same after putting it into your car and driving it for 100 years in the mean time- little sarcastic here as non of us will drive our cars 100 years, but you get the idea.

Gauge cluster stores the mileage. Not the ECU.

Thanks for your replies. I've already paid some $$$$ or SE gauge cluster. Can anyone tell me how hard to swap it? "I hate GXE every time I pass tonnel I become 'GXE cluster blind'".

5spd 01 GXEs didn't come with the 6 speaker CD/Tape radio, only 4 door mounted speakers, single din tape player with a pocket below it

U couldn't get the convenience package the AUTO GXEs could with a 5spd.
