$1,000 to swap cars?
Okay, so I don't like the color of my car. I had a 2000 GXE (black) that I sold, and have regreted it ever since. I now have a dark green 2000 se that I "like" but don't love. I am pretty much convinced that it is tough to beat a maxima in terms of power, handling, size etc. for the money. So I think I need to stick with Maximas (and I have to have a 5 speed). I just emailed a dealer that has a 2000 grey lustre with black leather and same amount of miles as mine and told them I will give them $1,000 for the trade (mine for theirs plus $1,000). Is this the stupidest idea in the world? And do you think any dealer would do this?

Hm, personally I would not do it, too much money, if you were going to a pearl color, may be then I could see the price tag diff being worth it... Otherwise, the car you have, hopefully you owned for a while and know it well, and a new used car is always a gamble... You could add a few more $$ and get a good pain job done if it comes down to color, cause Nissan paint is crap to begin with, so going from crappy paint job to another different color paint job is not worth it in my eyes... My 2 cents...

If you can't afford an '02 just save up more and repaint the car. Chances are the paint on both cars isn't in good shape and it isn't a smart idea spending $1000 for 5 year old paint. Also, it may not be worth the dealer's trouble making a deal for just $1000, but who knows.

I like the '02 idea. Money is not really an issue, I just didn't want to spend a ton to get ANOTHER 5th gen.
I would think that $1,000 would not be enough to get a true quality paint job, getting the door sills and everything.

why throw the money away on something that really doesn't matter...the design is the same, performance is the same. might as well upgrade to a newer car than getting into another 5yr old maxima with 80k+ mi.

Depending on how reasonable/desperate the dealer is, I don't see why they would take your offer when they can easily bend someone else over and earn $2-4k on a sale plus trade-in. If the color really matters that much to you, I'd suggest you buy and sell on the private market; skip the dealers. But my personal opinion is to go to the $1 store and buy yourself a pair of really dark sunglasses. Put them on everything you look at your car and maybe it'll look black. Good luck.

I agree with the guys above. If there's nothing wrong with your Maxima, and you just want to change its color, I would put the money toward a paint job instead of trading for another used Maxima. You know your car, and you don't know what could be wrong with the other Maxima. Carfax reports are next to useless.

don't do it. not worth it. when i brought my 02 auto (coming from a 5speed protege) after 3 months i regret not buying a 6 speed but knew i would have to live with it. Thru uncontrollable situations my 02 got totalled and i knew i wasn't gonna settle for nothing but a 6 speed. Took a while but i found it. But in your situation its not really worth it.....unless you upgrade to 5.5 gen
