If turbos and superchargers are bad for the car and reduce life, why do Audi's have them stock? Do they not last that long like regular cars? I want a conservative turbo or vtech for my car. Why doesn't Nissan have a turbo or vtech for Maximas. If there was this, nothing would even come second to our cars
ooh ooh! lemme answer! 1st off, vtec isnt forced induction like turbo/super charging. what those do is force more air in the engine and increase pressure. vtec, ???i believe is a timing technology that varies the cam lift at certain rpm levels or does something witht he valves.??? as far as variable valve timing goes. our maximas use NVICS which is one of nissan's lower end valve timing technologies. the turbos and sc's dont necessarily reduce the life of the car, but they wear out after long usage and need to be maintained.
Yeah, a turbo can last forever...
If you take care of it. SCs can wear out after as little as 100k miles. They also take power away from the engine before you get any back. Example: Jackson Racing's roots blower for the Hondas and Miata. I dunno about cetrifugal blowers like the Vortech V1/2, tho. Since they're basically a turbo, they probably last longer.
Nissan has variable valve timing in the VG30DE, and I think that's it for the states. In Japan, there's a hot version of the Sentra's SR20DE called the VE, and it puts out 190hp due to variable valve timing. There's also a nutso 1.6L cranking out 200hp. The R34 Skyline's RB25DE engines also feature it.

vtech.. it's a high lift cam technology. what it is, is the cams have an extra lobe on it, and when the rpm hits which ever the vtech is set, it'll electronically switch cams lobes creating a higher intake or something like that. yeah something with the valves. hehe. i've never heard a stock turbo not lasting, nor have i not heard all turbo cars of the same model that lasts forever. NA cars that are turboed might not last as long because the motor wasn't built for it in the first place. there are certain things that are different in the motor that are different than the na motor. for example, the sparkplugs arent the same, and usually people do mods to strengthen the NA motor so it won't blow when you add a turbo on, especially if you are running high boost, ask the guy with a five cylinder maxima on our board. hehe. turbo95max. or somthing aka mathel
Turbos/ superchargers are "bad" per se
If the car is orignally designed for forced induction in the first place. I would say turbos and SC need more and diligent maintance but it's the small price you pay for the higher performance these items offer.
There is no aftermarket VTEC system for your maxima. Tooling and RD to make such a thing possible would run over 20k. But you can certianly have a turbo or sc(if you have a 95+ maxima).
The 92-94 SE maximas had a cam advancing feature on the intake cams but it's not VTEC type technology.
