Here is the response I got from Nissan when I sent them a letter showing my disgruntlement about the new Altima and the current paint issues. Apparently, the 2002 Maxima will be faster than the New Altima.

Thank you for contacting Nissan North America, Inc. and allowing us the
opportunity to be of assistance.

We are very sorry to hear of your concerns in regard to the recent
remodeling and upgrading of our 2002 Altima.

All auto manufacturers improve their product line-up from one model year to
the next. There is no perfect time to purchase any consumer product that's
constantly being upgraded and priced accordingly.

The next generation Altima that goes on sale in September '01 is a full
model change that's all new from the ground up. As we make improvements to
the Altima nameplate, likewise improvements are constantly being made to our
Nissan flagship Maxima.

The '02 Maxima will feature the same basic design as the 2000/2001 models
but will be more powerful than the new Altima and include more features
befitting a flagship model. These improvements for the '02 model do not
detract from the '01 models we currently sell. In fact, the current Maxima
includes features that continue to be found only on our top-of-the-line
model.

Maxima heritage and it's award-winning engine provide the quality and
performance Maxima buyers originally were looking for. The Maxima is a
valued brand and will continue to hold a unique and even more exclusive
position in Nissan's future line-up.

In regard to the paint issue, we suggest having your vehicle inspected at
your nearest Nissan dealer. Our Consumer Affairs department relies on our
Nissan dealers to provide technical assistance with our products. If the
paint issue can be verified by one of our dealers as a defect, please
contact us with your Vehicle Identification Number, vehicle mileage and
dealer name. We will contact the dealer on your behalf to review your
concern.

If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail
us.

Sincerely,

Layne Wakuta

Hmm..they said the 2002 Maxima will be more powerful than the Altima. Interesting.

They basically gave you the reach-around in regards to the paint problem. It wouldn't hurt to hound the dealers again though.

Thank you for sending them a letter and sharing their reply with us. It was greatly appreciated.

Was there ever any doubt that the 2002 Maxima would be more powerful than the new Altima? I think only the 'angry-at-Nissan-for-the-2002-Altima' folks believed the Maxima would have it's crown taken away.

Go, Nissan! Maxima...Cars Like It: 0...Still!

wow

Also very funny that there are typos in a Nissan-written letter. They need to kick some *** at Consumer Affairs!!

My dealer told me today that they were not changing the Maxima until 2003.Therefore the new Alty's will be more powerfull but just for 1/2 year or so.I heard rumors the new maxima motor is NASTY.Like 290 NASTY.Also going to be well over 30G's also.

Ditto

Well now count me in as having the same exact response from them, as I have worked in email response myself this is just a select rebuttle and hit send. Pure B.S. no one in charge even saw our complaints.
They don't seem to care about keeping loyal customers with this...its a lot like the other thread we had earlier that Kev started.
No duh there's no perfect time, but when a company delibrately accelerates depreciation in the value of the car you just bought theres no way you get "brand" loyalty.
This is more corporate B.S. from them typical crap.
