fuel filter install, I ALMOST MADE IT!!

well, as all know, when meccanoble tries to do a DIY, things fall apart like maya angelou. The job was pretty easy, ran into no issues except one. Disconnecting the fuel filter harness off the nipple on the top assembly. I didnt know how to pull it off, whether to hold the tabs together or apart. Long story short, i ended up breaking the nipple and tried jb welding it back on but no luck. So....now i have to go buy an entire assembly from a junkyard for 75 beans. More money out my mo*^#$ing pocket. What an easy job, how do i always manage to f*ck sh*t up.

Anyway, if anyone needs a fuel pump, i'll have one for sale for 50 shipped. Hit me up. And i've taken this B*tch out a few tiems so if anyone has any questions, i can help. And at 67k miles, my old fuel filter is dirty as *****, thats using 93 octane and driving half the time with the gas light on.

mecca was telling me this over PMs. This is exactly what happened to me. It sucks. Be very careful when you're changing those fuel filters--buy a new fuel sending unit assembly if necessary just so you have it with you in case you need it (and take it back to the dealer if you don't)

What is a good indication letting you know your fuel filter needs changing?

Ok theres a return line and a line then put the gas in right ? jsut switch those 2 line and you will be ok ! i wish i could explain my self better, thats what ive done and it works great .

Yeah, by buying a new sending unit assembly. (along with bottom chamber since I had to break the black return hose that submerges the return line, and that black hose comes with the bottom chamber assembly)
But before then, I did have a rigged setup. I communicated this to mecca, he doesn't have a dremel though (I needed it for my rig)

That works, and that's what I did, except it causes the system to lose fuel pressure after you shut off the engine. Not a huge problem, you can prime it up by clicking it over to START for a split second a couple times over ~10 seconds before starting, but still, that's a hassle. To get it in OEM-like condition, you need the black return hose going to the bottom chamber properly hooked up to the return line nipple, which will be broken (since it's the old fuel supply nipple) if you switch them.

well, a great learning experience. I put the new one in less than 10 minutes but forgot to take the fuse out before taking the assembly out a second time. Long story short, my car runs great, i've driven around and the needle hasnt moved much at all which is a good thing but my dam CEL light is on. I'm hoping after a reset it goes away cause i think it just came on cause i forgot to take the fuse out and was playing wit fuels pressure and whatnot.

I can do this real fast and easy. I guess a new lesson/experience under my belt.

Last thing needing fixing on this car is my dam wheel bearing and i'm completely maintenance/noise/problem free of this car...cant wait

Where is the fuel filter for 2001 located at? I went to the dealership and asked them to replace it, and they told me that my car has no fuel filter.

Did you guys use housecor's writeup to replace your fuel filter? How much does it all costs?

I have seen 2 5th gens locally (h2kfrosty and Chris's Max) both try to do walbro installs and both of them broke this nipple. It seems to be a reoccuring problem. Now I see why Nissan didn't want us to try to change it. The 4th gen setup is SO much easier to work on.

yup ^^^^ thats the write up i used. It's mad easy just a little time consuming. I can do it so fast, hardest part or biggest worry is breaking sh*t cause a lot of the parts u deal with are plastic.

I spent 24 dollars + shipping on o ring and filter from DAVE B. Dont go anywhere else but him. DEalers either will NOT have this part or tell u its not supposed to be changed. Another example of how the dealer is not the best place to go for recommendations about our cars.

Tools needed: screw driver, 10 mm ratchet, 8 mm ratchet, flat head screw driver, and a set of needle nose pliers which are slightly thicker. PLiers i used help squeeze the harness which holds onto the nipples.

Yes, I found it PITA to remove the line too but did not break anything :-) I used some very thin screw-drivers to get the connector of the nipple and spent most of the time on that part...

No, are YOU serious. Not nissans specifically, just cars in general. You know as well as i that fuel filters are dirty and clogged WELL before 100k. If you are careful and dont break anything, its definately helping to change the thing, correct?

I did a fuel filter on a 2000 I30, and that thing was in horrible shape, i think the guy only had a bit over50k on it. Forget what nissan says, they love to lie, I would change it at 50k.

MECCONOBLE. I'm glad everything worked out for you, Good luck with the car.

I was at 65-70K when I did mine for the first time and I posted pics of the filter in the thread I cited above so judge for yourself... The filter was nice jet-black :-)

As far as Nissan comments are concerned, I read in the "suggested maintenance schedule" brochure that our brake systems are equiped with sophisticated system that will emit a high pitched sound when the pads wear out and indicate that you will need to take your car to the dealer ASAP for check up.
