Phantom Grip
Does anyone have the Phantom grip http://mmrusa.com/phantom1.htm in their max? If so, how do you like it?

phantom grip = $300ish
quaife = $1200+ish
quaife isnt for everyone, but it seems to be the best.
though in not sure if the stock unit will fit in a non-lsd trans (or if the oem unit is a quaife unit), you might try a j/y

Thats what you will need after 10K miles.
I had it, and do NOT recomend it.

yes well, irish seems to have that persuasion ability, hes been here quite some time and alas, i have no first hand experience with the phantom grip.
however, id love nothing more than to break a tranny so i can tear it down and build it up... honestly, id probably end up going with a stock unit.
stock units are clutch type, correct?
i prefer the torsen myself

Who on here has had Phantom Grip ???? I don't know of anyone but Stardust and myself. I was going to put his PG in for him when I was doing his tranny+ clutch and flywheel bout year ago- we decided no to do it.
PG requires you to GRIND down the spider gears inside the diff to make the Phantom Grip plate fit in. It says SOME cars might need grinding down to make it fit, some do not. Its a UNIVERSAL design for many cars- it is NOT maxima specific.
After you remove the diff, and remove the spider gears from inside the diff, they want you to take it to a bench grinder and make the gears not as wide as stock- for room the PG requires. By doing so you weaken the gears and they will crack on you. I personaly experienced shavings from the actuall PG itself when I took my tranny apart after noticing too many metal debris in my tranny oil. I went ahead and took the PG out of my tranny, and 40K miles later I just repleaced my whole tranny with a BRAND spanking new Nissan tranny.
I highly advise you to NOT use PG in your transes, it does work, but it puts too much stress on the diff itself and you will have issues later on.
Quaiffe diff or NISMO diff for a 91-96 Altima/Stanza 5spd will work in our trannies and its 100000x better, and its reliable- more reliable than the stock diff itself.

as to my "homedepot" mods...I only do them if I can do them better than buying them....
I can't make a good LSD from home depot parts

just because you have double the traction doesnt mean that you wont be able to light em up
i think www.howstuffworks.com has a differential thing that you might take a look at.

Acutally 93-97 Altima but NISMO only listed for the 93-94 .. those were the common years for OEM LSD trannys.. very few in 95's 96 change over with obdII and the 97s was a limited edition ,meaning the Altys was being retired.
only over seas the Altima Conterpart Bluebird came 92
91 Stanza only came with a KA24E no DEs yet.
I didnt realized QUaiffee made anything for Altimas.
the reason my 2cents about Altys was because I spent my whole life savings on that car before I brought a Maxima..
And Agreeing to the Topic I had the NISMO LSD in my Tranny along with 2k plus work into my tranny for boosted.
The PG really is what Blackbird says it is..I have a few Honda Buddys that completly rip apart thier Gears because of PG..
Ive seen a few Se-Rs with Qualife and never had any problems.
You do get for what you pay for. But Why do a LSD tranny unless your highly Modded? My decision for my Altima to have it was because I had a LSD and wanted to Try something different as far as Aftermarket. (the 900 price tag for the LSD was worth with it ) along with boosting at the Tracks all the time. This is what made my deciding factor for an Aftermarket LSD.
In short for the guys who question about the PG ..take it from guys that already * been there and done that* I have no experience when it comes to aftermarket "trail and error" Maxima parts..But I do when it comes to the Altimas. And some question me at the site when I made comments on parts that didnt work or worth it,Of corase theres always the kid that knows it all.
I would listen to BlackBird tho because of experince.. and from my experince PG isnt the right decision for a LSD.

6spd LSDs are helical.
Yes, Torsen-type diffs 0wn everything.

well, presuming traction is going to both wheels, you have twice the contact patch. we have to get some slip before the transfer occurs, so figure what/ 1.932x the traction
thats good info, thatnks for posting it

Yes, you're right that a LSD will put power to both wheels evenly. But for that to be twice the traction of an open diff, it would have to be the case that an open diff only sends power to one wheel at a time during a hard launch, which isn't the case. It still goes to both wheels. It just happens to go a little more to one wheel than the other.
Hence the comment that a LSD usually isn't really useful except on a highly modded car. Our open diffs do mess up the power transfer, but it's not so bad that it's seriously holding back the car's abilities.
That's just what I think, anyway.

You don't get 2x the traction off the line with an LSD. You get more, yes, but not 2x more. Either way, you're definitely right that it's silly to doubt that an LSD will help traction.

an open diff sends the power to the wheel that wants to rotate the easiest. that means you can have one wheel completely stopped and not doing ANYTHING while the other wheel is spinning its brains out.
the worst part is that it spins the easiest one to turn- so the wheel that has the traction isn't getting the torque. the other wheel is basically disconnected from the drivetrain at that point.

one can launch harder without excessive wheelspin, thus lowering 60ft times...
would you doubt the quicker accel times of an AWD eclipse vs. its FWD counterpart?
