Questions on software update/reprogram of ECU

I've owned my 02 SE 6-spd for about 1 month now and have logged just over a 1,000 miles. During that period I've had to reset my SES light 3 or 4 times for code 1147 & 0139 for the bank 1 rear 02 sensor. After reading various posts and a TSB it sounds like the ECU might just need a software update/reprogram to widen the limits of the 02 sensor and that it just fails too easily. Does this sound right?

I plan on taking my Maxima in to the dealer to get the crank sensor recall done and I was going to talk to someone about getting the ECU reprogrammed/updated.

And after reading all the problems people have had with the MAF on the 5th gen maximas, I also thought there was a software update/reprogram for the ECU concerning the MAF issue.

I currently have not had a MAF issue but since it sounds fairly common I thought I would have the ECU reprogrammed/updated if it would help or lessen the chance of a future failure. Does this sound right?

Are the reprograms/updates something that the dealer should be real familiar with and willing to do? Or are they only going to want to do it after a part such as the 02 or MAF sensor has been replaced?

Also my cars 3 year/ 36Kmile update just expired in may due to the 3 year limit. I assume then that the ECU reprogram/update for the 02 sensor would no longer be covered under the emissions warranty. Is that correct?

Should I expect to pay for 1 hour labor for the tech to use the Consult II or does it typically take longer then that?

Also during the ECU reprogram/update would this be a good time to have the timing set to 17 degrees? Do you guys think this is a worthwhile mod?
(I know 91 octane or above would be required, but I've always used that in all my maximas)

Thanks in advance for any helpful answers that I get!
(I searched and read a lot on the issues before posting this, I was just hoping for some further clarification on the issues!)

you shouldnt have to pay for a PCM update, as long as youre under 8/80. a reprogram will not remedy or prevent a failed MAF. using the ocnsultII is pretty quick, provided the tech knows what theyre doing. once theyre in doing the reprogram, it doesnt take but another 3-5 minutes to adjust and check the timing.

I know I'm ressurecting an old thread here but it's somewhat related. My maxima has had an idle problem and intermittent stalling for a while so I took it to an auto electrician. He scanned it and pulled no codes. However he said alot of the settings had been changed by someone in the past for unknown reasons. They changed some of the settings around trying to fix the idle, which they did. Now it has different problems with the idle and stalling. If I unplug the battery for a few hours will this restore the ECU back to it's original stock settings, or will it simply clear any codes? I just want it back to its original settings. If I can't personally reset it I will have to take it to a dealer to get it reset.

I thought all 5th geners need the consult II to change the settings

He was able to change some of the settings, he mentioned the idle, the idle range and a few other settings which he was able to tweak. The machine they use is compatible with most cars apparently, and it's not a consult tool.
