Cali spec or Federal

The main difference between Federal and NLEV emissions is that the latter has two precats with a total of four O2 sensors versus a single precat and three O2 sensors for Federal emissions standards. In the Federal Spec emissions Maxima, you will find a single precat built into the intermediate pipe. Two of the sensors are placed before this and the last sensor is after the main cat. The Cali spec Maxima has two precats with one in the intermediate pipe and another one built into the front exhaust manifold. Two O2 sensors are located before the precats and the other two are after each of the precats. There are no O2 sensors after the main cat in this case.

Another, way is by the number of 02-plugs you have on the front valve cover clip/rack:

I was reading the above info. and was wandering which type of maxima is better to have Cali spec or Federal.

If you have an 02+ you don't have a choice.

Better in what sense?

They have stricter emmissions and emmissons detecing equiptment.

pretty much the same thing. the cali spec has one more O2 sensor. so i guess you have an extra sensor to replace. if you plan to do any exhaust mods it doesnt matter which one you have, the mods will perform the same.

i realize you have a 2k3 but just for info, all 2k1 are cali spec as well. on the 3.0, fed spec will typically yield more power from y pipes since it removes both precats. fed spec do not have swirl control either which would be apart of what NmexMAX stated.

2 plugs = 00/01 fed spec
4 plugs = 00/01 cali spec (and all 00/03)

00-2 plugs
01-03- 4 plugs.

As for the 02 sensors going bad- I still have all of my original ones at 123K miles and they are working just fine. <knock on wood>

I have a cali spec and I changed all 4 O2 sensors about a year ago. Just did them all at the same time cause I was hoping better MPG.
