Car has some idle issues and dies sometimes

My 00 SE w/ 100K on it has been acting up for some time now.

It is intermittent.

Sometimes it will idle funny - when you let off the gas it will go down real low, stumble for a second, then go back to normal. Its particularly noticable in parking lots since the power steering gets harder to use when it idles low.

Sometimes it will die altogether.....seems to be fuel related. I think I might occasionally get bad gas that does it cause it was going it last week - then I filled up and it didn't do it again. What will happen is when I let off the gas - sometimes at a stop light or sometimes getting on an entrance ramp on the highway (very scary) it dies. As the car is still moving I just pop the clutch to get it going again. Scare the crap out of me when I lose the PS on the highway. It also will happen when I start it up - starts, dies immediately unless I keep my foot on the gas for a few seconds.

I also have a dead spot in my powerband.......right at 4K its as if I hit a wall......during normal accelleratio it will pause for a second, then go again as normal. Its less noticable the more I'm on the gas. Annoying as hell.

Car is maintained pretty good - Mobile 1 every 4K, new plugs, etc. I had an ignition coil go bad a few months ago (who hasn't) so I replaced it.

What is it? Somebody mentioned idle air controller........could that be it.

same thing with mine. cleaned my TB and that helped for about 5 mins of driving and then went back to normal. did you get 17TBC? perhaps that's it, the idle learning procedure prolly wasn't performed. you try cleaning your TB?

OK , Rich96 First of all go here and watch it in it's intirety (sp) -

Do a search for 'car stalling' or rough idle or 'car dies' there are instructions on how to search on the stickies... this topic has been talked about over and over - and they like to for double threads : / So go find out how to fix it - this is what i did - unplug the MAF sensor and start the car. try to make it stall - if it doesnt - then it's a bad MAF or so I've heard -

in short go check out the other threads - they have oodles of info on this

Yup, I would first clean the throttle body, then replace the PCV, then look at IAC valve and so on from here... Anybody with any other ideas feel free to pitch in... Try these parts in order first and if you still have troubles come back and hopefully we can help you :-)

what's the PCV and the IAC valve? i haven't been able to fix my idling issues and i've unplugged that brown connector near the TB.

I am not sure if you are disconnecting the right thing. MAF (looks like a round plastic tube) is located before TB, and between the bumpy rubber hose and air filter box. There is a connector on the top of it. Harness for it runs across the filter box and is protected with black insulating hose... Try this again before you proceed...

To clean the throttle you will need to remove the rubber hose I mentioned above...

PCV = positive crank ventilation, costs about $5 and is easy to replace. Look up "how-to" section for instructions...

IAC = idle air control, located near TB, somewhat easy to clean but gotta be careful as you can mess things up...

Looking from the front of the car, PCV is located on the left hand side of the TB, looking below the rubber midpipe, and under the TB cables... It is somewhat tucked in... You will see a black rubber hose of about 3/8" thickness going to it (the hose starts from the top of the engine and has a thinner hose next to it at the starting end)...
