03 tranny about to go?

Well guys this morning as I'm going to work. I hop in my car and start the car up and put it in reverse. The car would not move, tapped the accelerator and it still would not move. Put it in Drive and found D,3,2,1 working fine. So than I finally decide to throw it in Reverse again, this time giving it a lot more gas(revved it to about 3.5K RPM), boom it went into gear. So I backed out of my driveway, but then thought better of the situation. I instead took my mother's car to work. I have 48Kmiles on my car, and still haven't changed the trans fluid on the car. Do you guys think thats a reason? Also do you think Nissan will give me a problem with my warranty since I have Headers and Intake. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your link bro. Though do you think this problem occured because of the trans fluid not being replaced? I just told my bro to check my trans fluid, and he told it's full, but the fluid is brownish instead of being redish. He also said it went into reverse okay.

It's possible that it could be something minor like the fluid or some sensor, but usually when trannys die, they start their death spiral in either reverse or first. Luckily, you have a standard 75k mile powertrain warranty. Drain and fill first just to be safe (get rid of the evidence of neglect....but i didn't tell you...) then take it to a dealership that does aftermarket stuff. There's one in Frederick that won't even blink an eye at your headers.

I have the same problem as you do with my transmission. my forward gears slip and sometimes the reverse gear doesnt work. I do not think that changing a fluid will help our problem. I purchased a new tranny for my 2000 GXE. I have 68K miles on my car and i will not lie, i abused the hell out of it and i am not surprised it went south. The tranny i purchased ($600) is an auto with 5K miles on it. i will be doing a swap starting today 8/30/05. I will be taking pictures as i do it and will come up with a write-up later on. let me know if you found out what's wrong with your tranny. As far as i know, my seals and other parts in my tranny are gone. dealer asked for $1,900 in order to get it fixed. Let me know what u think. Aleksey.

just completed a complete Trans Flush at O'brien Nissan. As far the trans goes.....I haven't been able to duplicate the problem. The forward gears seem fine to me(Maxima auto's suck anyway). Hopefully what happend this morning was just a fluke.

You sound like a Nissan tech.

If you have an Aamco near you, I think they can diagnose your tranny for free to see if it is on its way to failure. Or at least that's what their commercials say.

Definately quit abusing your tranny... I have 140,000 give or take a mile or two on my autotragic. Absolutely no problems with it. (knocking the heck out of a piece of wood). Normal fluid flushes and I have never seen anything but pretty red fluid out of it.

I have an heavy right foot and 104 000KM on my 2k1 AE SE, the Auto tranny is strong and doesn't slip. I had the auto tranny TSB done under warranty, I believe they replace some solenoid & TCS and what else, that fixes the tranny slip.

Not replacing your fluid with 47K on the car has absolutely nothing to do with it. I'd be more incline to make that statement if your ride had 147K on it with the original fluid. Dealer says to change at 30K most people wait till 50K if at all. Automatic trans do get hot especially if you hammer them and that will cause the fluid to break down a lot faster. I would still dump the fluid, run what Nissan recommends and drive it for a few days.

I know a few guys that have repalced their trannies.

No need to granny drive it, cause if it can't handle it, something is definitly wrong.

Also rembmer that the 2k2/2k3 maximas make more power than the 2k1/2k.

Is there a TSB out for 2K2-2K3 Tansmissions?

Hi I had tranny problems but it did that banging into gear in 1st gear and noticed slipping and I got a new tranny at about 50k. Also I had y pipe on when serviced but that varies by dealer. Change the fluid that helps a lot.

i don't think the tranny fluid being little dirty is going to make it slip like that
low yes but brown no i have 54k on my 2k1 and my tranny fluids never been changed far as i know i bought at 46k so i can't tell far as the color on mine it's not bright red it's more of a light red could be brownish but my tranny runs fine and full i'm going to have it flushed at valvoline they do it for 100.00
dealer wants 129.00 crazy right any way any suggestions on where to take it

wtf is the point of owning a car that has 222hp under it's hood and driving it like a grandma? I love the sound of my CAI at WOT and some 4-cylinder piece of crap vanishing in my rear-view mirror...

The Tranny is definitly starting to slip fellas. First gear is fine, but the 2-3 shift is slipping. I drove my cousin's 2k3 Maxima just to make sure. Looks like a new trans is on the horizon for the Max, and theirs an annoying squeak coming from underneath the car(suspension)......***!!!

Sheer: That sux. I followed the old GM plan when changing the tranny fluid in my '02 (Every 15,000 miles). Never had a whit of trouble out of it. Did the same thing on the 3rd Gen.

I must admit though I've beaten the crap out this tranny.....Damn right foot. So even if I followed the "GM plan", it was only inevitable that my tranny was going to give. Is it normal for ATF to turn into a brownish color after 49K miles?

Exactly what happened to my 2000 auto before it completely took a dump...the 2-3 shift just started slipping more and more until I pulled off the freeway one day and found out all I had was 1st...I didn't abuse the hell out of mine, but I definitely did some "spirited driving"...I even did a flush after 40k miles...when my tranny died at 62k, the guys who pulled the transmission out said that the fluid was absolutely toast...I dunno wtf happened.
