Gas tank failure?

So I've been fighting a "phantom" P0456 code for several months. Suddenly last week, the CEL is on again, only this time it stays on for a full week. Pulling codes reveals P0446, 0455 and 0456...hrmm...as I'm standing outside my car I start to smell gas. This continues for several days.

Anyway, it's in the shop right now. Apparently, the evap leak is located somewhere between the gas tank and the car body. I filled up the tank before I brought the car in, and it's already leaked half a gallon onto the shop floor. 3.8 hours of labor is what it costs me (even at half rate) to get the tank dropped. So, I'm waiting on the report now; but the tech is telling me he thinks the gas tank is probably cracked at the top...

Is there any good reason for a gas tank to fail after 67,000 miles? Has any other .org member had a problem with leaking fuel tanks? Would love some input as none of this is covered by Nissan (I have no x-warr.)

i doubt it failed, but its possible. if its coming form the top, id think it might be the seal on the fuel pump. he probbaly should have pulled the seat and checked it first.

anyhow, labor for R+I fuel tank is 1.8hrs, plus 1hr diag. you shouldnt be paying more than 2.8hrs in labor, if its just replacing the tank.
