Disable Auto headlights

This is a little difficult to explain, so if you need further clarification, just let me know.

I'm trying to find out if and how you guys disable the auto headlight feature on the maxima's.

Most of you guys have rewired your fogs.. for the sake of be able to turn them out without your headlights. Now, when you have HID's.. you know not to turn them on for short period of time.

So, on a cloudy day... where your sensors think its dark enough to turn on the headlights, and you only want to turn on your fogs, do you always cycle through the headlights to the parking lights?

I'm hoping people actually do this and I'm not the only idiot that thinks of something so stupid.. so any help will be appreciated.

also looks like a bl/y wire from the switch going to the smart entrance control unit that signals that 'auto' position. im guessing clipping it would be the permanent answer. it goes through the switch providing a ground signal to the module.

Ya I know that... but i was hoping for a better method...

I go through a tunnel everyday for work, and I'd like to be able to turn on some light for a short period of time.. but to turn on HID's for 1 min seems useless... so that type of situation is what I'm trying to solve... plus if your driving a long time... and the sun is setting, and you want to turn on the fogs... how would you do that without cycling?

Ahh... ok cool.. nice thing about wires is you can cut them... and put them back together without a problem...

Btw, do people actually do this?

I dont know if I want to mess with the smart entrance control unit.... no way of adjusting the sensitivity of the sensor? So like if its pitch dark it turns on...

Edit: Apparently the Consult_II can do what I want in terms of reprogamming, but I dont have a clue who would be able to do this... dealership would even bother? probably not.

I run into the same problem. In morning traffic I always creep under the same overpass which is not an issue going 70 mph. However, my lights usually click on the 30 secs I under it. I trained myself to switch from auto to off before I get to this point....also when I park in the parking garage at work. As far as running the fog lights...????? I'd be interested in a solution to that as well.

Isn't it damaging to the lights to do this?

You could remove the sensor then the switch in the auto position would be dead essentially. Dont know if it works but it seems logical and may be worth a try.

if this wire is the only signal for the auto feature to work, then you could put in an inline switch to activate or deactivate the auto on feature as you see fit. just a thought.....

I never understood the concept of driving with foglights only in non-foggy weather... but anyways, there was a thread in the 6th Gen forum about auto vs manual setting (because of the stupid placement of the AUTO, Parking Lights, and ON, having to cycle through them, etc) and I think some people threw around the idea of re-wiring. I'm not sure if anyone actually did it, but here is the thread so you can see for yourself:

I have an idea that's been on my mind for quite some time. We all know that Nissan should have made the stalk so that "Auto" was below "Off" and parking lights and headlights were above "Off." What I've been wonderig is has anyone ever taken the stalk apart? Would it be possible to switch the "Off" wire and "Auto" wire so that Auto would be where Off is and vice versa? Does that makes sense? I know the readings on the stalk would then be incorrect but we would know that putting it on Auto is actually off and putting it all the way down to off would actually be Auto.

Yes - dealership changed mine so it has to be darker before the lights switch on. Unfortunately this doesn't help for bridges, tunnels etc.

You know come to think of it that would be a great after market item. A new stalk wired with Auto below Off.

I have the same problem, i just try to remember to turn on my running lights before starting the car. I also usually run with it in the off position to not worry about the tunnels or anything else. I have been getting better at switching to just parking lights very quick tho, so to not activate the HIDS

I do love the BMW light control tho. It goes AUTO, OFF, PARKING, ON. Thats the way it should be
