odd VI question 2k GXE

So i've bought my Girlfriend a 2k gxe and have already replaced one coil pack for that damned p1320 (seems to have gotten rid of it and yes i'll be replacing the whole set asap) My question is concerning the VI and how it works, being completely stock with the constrictive air box and exhaust has anyone else felt the acceleration "dog out" when the vi opens up? I first assumed that an intake and exhaust would clear up that feeling and open her up but is there any way that a previous owner could have reversed something or messed with it to make the vi start open then close at higher rpms or is this impossible?

when the vi turns on, you won't notice a jump in power, it just keeps you from loosing power at higher rpms.

Look at this FAQ thread for more info on vi

may be a dumb Q but whats a VI? Ive been trying to find info on my problem and so far no luck. my car hesitates bad when its cold and cuts out at higher RPMs even sitting in idle I can rev it up it will hit about 5grand, then bog itself down to about 4200 and work its way back to 5G without ever moving the throttle. No coil pack codes and when I was messing with it today just unplugging one coil at a time each one had the same effect on how the car ran. Any ideas?

if the VI had alot of use from the previous owner then it could be broken. mine was bad after just 50k miles. the power rod inside the manifold the part that spins to open at 5k rpms is attached to a cup on the right side. the cup spins so much that it actually breaks and seperates. this could be why your girlfriends car might feel sluggish above 5krpms. it could be broken in the position for under 5krpms and it will not open above that. only way to verify is to open it up.

to check the cup, you have to remove the actuator box. there are 4 screws holding it in so becareful using just a screwdrivier. people typically strip them out because they are much softer. it is best to replaced them with bolts and you find that info in the faq. if the cup is broken, you can use the jb weld method to put it back in place. my cup has been broken for a while so i just removed the power valve completely and hopefully will come to a fix that does not involved jb.
