If i had my timing advanced and then my battery was disconnected for a long period of time, will i have to get my timing advanced again?

 

No, it should be fine, the only way it resets is with the consult II.. if you're really paranoid you can have it verified/checked by a Consult again ...

 

yeah, but Nissan are trying to make me pay $98 to check it again. I was hoping someone new of hand.

 

it will not reset on 5th gen maximas.

 

Just go to Autozone and let them check for free. Tell the Nissan people your doing it also. Check the facial expressions when you say it.

 

Err ehhh They cannot check the base timing at AutoZone, only the codes ... They (AZ) DO NOT have a Consult II ...

 

they might have a handheld obd2 which depending on model can check base timing. i have seen a few different parts places carry different models. some just check codes and others are full functioning but of course if you want to change timing then consult 2 is a must. i happened to have an old laptop from college and just put it to use with harrison software from odbscan.net

Jay-pee. Take it to Fred-neck Nissan. It'll save you about $15 bucks or so. PM me for my phone number and we can split the savings at the brewery up there.

negative. need a consult 2 to do but that shop in indian trail will do it but not sure what they charge. it only about 2 miles from my house but IIRC bladerunr went there and they wanted 50. i think he ended going to a dealer in rock hill and they did it for 20 or 25 bucks. the place in indian trail is niss-tech and they bought the consult from what was independence nissan.

 

yep, when i had my 4th gen back in 99 i always took my car there to have them work on it. i was close to the manager jeff there. i'm gonna try to take it there then, if not i'll go to rock hill.

Jay, we just went down to brown's fairfax Nissan and slipped one of the techs a little cash to do it out at the back door of the garage. Most dealers will not do it "on the books" (trust me, I tried 4 different local ones) or will charge you alot.

 

Just a quick (shaggy dog story) check in on the timing issue. Was involved in a lot of the technical discussions back in the spring and summer (Hey Irish - hope I provided some informative stuff about timing theory and manufacturers generally compromising a little and therefore the 15 btdc on the Max can probably be advanced a few degrees without problem). Well, having talked myself into it, I actually asked several dealerships to advance my timing to 17, and was given various "can't do it's" and "you'll harm your engine etc."
Had the "unfortunate" experience of the service engine soon light coming on recently on a rainy Friday afternoon. (coincidentally a few miles after 10,000). Remembered there was a Nissan dealership on the way home that I had never visited before (and not wanting to drive with the light on all weekend) I decided to stop in and ask if there was some mileage link I didn't know about and if something needed to be reset. They had me pull right in -The tech hooked up the Consult - first question, "Is your gas cap on tightly?" Sure enough I had trapped the retainer strap under the edge of the cap and it hadn't tightened right - luckeeee! While he was dropping the code, I asked if he could check the idle speed and timing - I thought they both might be a little low. He bumped the rpm and said my timing was at 14. He readily bumped it to 17 for me. And we were right all along! Better idle, better performance and shifting, and better gas mileage just in time for $3.59 a gallon. I'm pretty sure that the base timing at idle will show an advance by just using a traditional timing light and the "wire loop" on the engine as shown in the ESM.
