You ask this on a Maxima board would you expect but a pretty biased crowd?

It depends on what you want out of your car.

I'd vote 02/3 SE. I like the power over the IS300 ...

There should be some sort of test to post on the boards.

Punctuation is your friend!

i have owned an 01 is300. its a completely different car from my 2000 se. one is rwd one is fwd. i like rwd but it sucks in the snow. and there traction control feels like some1 is choken my engine and not helping grip at all. the only car i would trade my 00 for, is an 02, or 03 i didnt have the money when i bought mine in 02 for the new style. but mine only had 16k on it when i got it and its not bad for 2-3yrs old since i got it in oct of 02 the 03s were about to come out if they werent already. i LOVE my max. and i woudl never buy another IS again. but i would drive both weigh the cons and a pros of each and see what u come out on. if u are intrested and u wanna come to jersey my boy has an 01 in pearl white he may wanna sell with about 55-60k on it. not sure how much he wants but its in great condtion and it was always babied he drives like a old lady! anyway let me know PM me if u want his #

There are 2 'series' of the 5th gen, we refer to the 00-01 as the 5th gen and the 5.5g as the 02-03 mode years.

The 5.5 being represented as upgrades from the 00-01 and small refinements in looks, related to/headlights/tailights/grill/splash guards, and a new engine.

either one has a pretty bare aftermarket ... turbos are rare for most any year of Maxima.

Stillen makes a supercharger for the 5-speed, there are also some custom turbos floating around the .org, but mainly the aftermarket stuff we get is just for show.

just for show? ... there is a good amount of suspension stuff available for the 5th gen, including 10+ types of springs, 4-5 types of struts, poly bushings for the whole car, several RSBs, FSTBs, RSTBs, lower tie bars, etc etc.

Engine: SC for the 5th gen, TC for the 5.5gen.... headers, 3-4 ypipes, several exhaust setups, UDPs, intakes, tranny coolers, flywheels, clutches, BBKs (several)....

I mean, you can pretty much upgrade every part of the suspension and engine if you have the $$, hell, there are even engine internals available, at least for the VQ30.....

i like the 2003 6 speed maximas. I have an auto but if i didnt have to let some of my family members drive it then i would have gotten manual. sigh.....

I wouldnt get the IS300, but ill get the new IS350 if I had the $$. I dont care about the performance of the IS even though its pretty good. The interior and the technology is just hawt.

I work on a car lot and have driven plenty of IS300s. They don't compare to a 5.5 gen Maxima. Especially for the price.

The Maxima is much faster, roomier and pretty well supported in the aftermarket.

You can also expect to pay a lot more for the Lexus with similar miles. Maximas depreciate horribly in the first few years. The Lexus holds its value much better. That makes the Max a great used value. I would never buy one new though.

You can always get an I35 as an alternative to the Maxima, mechanically identical.

Test drive both, get the one you like better. You'll be driving it, not us.

mmm, you guys are nuts about the is300. it has almost the same engine as the supra, plust it's rear wheel drive. and an inline 6. great upgrade potential for power. check out some lexus forums for stats.
the downside to all this, is is300 is a 5spd tranny mated to an inline six. not the best gas milage, worse than the 3.5vq.
i think for the last 3 years, lexus brand had the least repairs per car out of ALL manufacturers. they are great quality.
oh yeah, the is350 blows chunks compare to the is300.
its a 3.5 v6, definetely take the 5.5 gen maxima over the new lexus.
