6sp MT, shifting into reverse

I got pulled over last weekend for speeding. After receiving my ticket, i was upset and very distracted, and accidentaly shifted into reverse from 4th gear at about 50 mph. I did not shift all the way since the gears ground real bad. Now shifting into reverse is hard, and sometimes the shifter will only go in half way, and get stuck. I have to put it into neutral, and try to shift ito reverse again. Is my clutch ground, or is the reverse gear ground?
If i take it to a tranny shop, do they replace just the reverse gear, or the clutch?
SHifting into every forward gear is fine, sometimes the reverse does not catch properly.

how did you shift into reverse would be my 1st ? there's a lock on the 6 speed that you have to disengage to even get it into reverse, did you lift that lever accidentally?

you were going from 4th also, were you trying to skip 5th in and go into 6th?

uh huh. i was pissed off and distracted, and sitting there playing with the revers lockout. went all the way to the right, and down, like i would normally do when shifting into 6th, and popped half way into reverse, and made a really bad grinding noise while releasing the clutch. i immediately pushed the clutch back in, and put it into actual 6th gear.
now reverse seems muffed up. wont go into it at all sometimes, when it does, its harder to shift into reverse than normal.

My better half did the same thing a few months back. Like you said, some times I have to "fiddle" with putting it in reverse for a bit...then it goes. Hadn't really thought about it much, till your thread here. I don't think it's that big of a deal if your car is running ok.

ouch....!!!!!You must have really been distracted. I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as you can still put the car in reverse you should be alright or if the car is still under the powertrain warranty take it in....

hmm. how long is the standard powertrain? i have about 41k miles on the car right now.

something else happened twice alrady, i shift into reverse, and i think its in gear, and start taking the clutch out, and it grinds with a really high-pitch loud grinding noise. not like a regular grind, but sounds higher and faster grinding. is this because the rerverse gear has different teeth on it, or is the cluch engagement different for reverse gear?

I have the same problem some times I have a tough time going into reverse and it will make the high pitched grinding sound like you mentioned. Usually when this happens I take it out of reverse sitick it in first and back to reverse and it goes right in. My car came like this I have never shifted into reverse while I was going anywhere over like one or two mph.

5/60,000 miles. So you are still under warranty.

Mine does that high pitch grind to. Sometimes it won't engage into reverse all the way.

I had some troubles with my tranny slipping out of reverse or being troublesome getting in there. Shift the car into first before you shift into reverse. Apparently the synchros are similarly matched, so it should make it easier to shift into reverse.

Why is it bad to skip gears? If the revs are high enough it shouldnt matter correct?

nah, you can skip gears, it wont hurt. i often go from 4th to 6th; if not accelerating hard all the way through, you dont need 5th.
i will get up to about 60 or so in 4th, and drop in 6th and just cruise.
i sometimes to the same with 2 to 4, skipping 3rd.
i think the only way it will hurt is if you skip all the forward gears, and go straight to rerverse while still rolling forward. =(

Skipping gears is not a problem - if the revs are high enough.

Chronos- try changing your tranny fluid - put Redline in if you haven't already. Good luck

that's the plan for this weekend. if the problem still exists, and i take it to nissan, will they put my tranny fluid back in, or replace with something fresh from their shop floor?
i dont want to spend money on good mt-90, and then take it to nissan, just to have it re-filled with whatever they use...
