Hi All,

After my friend and I install the Stillen B pipe on to my Maxima 2000, I keep hearing pinging sound. My friend tells me is due to heat, that expands the aluminum which makes the sound. Not that I do not belive him, but I want to make sure is not due to a faulty install. Also, we used gaskets that came with the B pipe, we did not use anything else. Currently, I have an Injen Intake, Stillen Y pipe, a recently installed Stillen B pipe, with the stock muffler. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am not sure, but is definitely coming from underneath my car. Didn't have a chance to jack it up and see where is coming from, my guess is the B pipe.

 

I mean...do you hear the sound at idle, WOT, highway speeds, etc?

 

From what you have described, it sounds like just expansion of the b pipe. Mine cattman does it. Some more details would be nice but more than likly that is what it is.

 

its normal for a newly installed exhaust system.

 

I know what the solution is...remove the rear cross member that hangs below the bpipe...its located just before the bpipe bends around...if your still confused, theres a black large cross member with 8 bolts...and a small silver cross member with 2 bolts...it's the small silver one...u can't miss it

I had this same problem with my 2k2 while installing the cattman catback....I seriously couldn't figure out what the problem was...it was pinging whether the car was on or off....it just would NOT stop until the whole car got cooler....I further diagnosed it and found out it was the rear cross member and bpipe touching each other...all I did was remove it and the pinging went away completely...

 

Thats the problem I was having from my cattman hanging so low because my stock rubber hangers were so worn. Instead of removing the cross section i bought those Napa hangers and they are tough! That exhaust aint going anywhere. $5 each, 3 on the muffler and one on the b pipe. Just keep that biatch in place real tight and it wont go anywhere.

 

True, for those members who feel unsafe removing the cross member....you can try aftermarket exhaust hangers....or hose clamps around the stock rubber hangers....I went with the hose clamp route becuz I'm a lazy ********** : P

 

Exhaust is never made from Aluminum. Most are made from steel.
You could also try to bend that crossmember.

This is true...most factory exhaust systems are made out of aluminized steel...and the funny thing is, I got into an arguement with my friend...he claims that aluminized exhausts don't rust, sayin **** like hes very familiar with chemistry...etc...but in fact they do, and they do so alot more quickly than SS...then later he shows me all this scientific data about how Aluminum the ATOM doesn't rust etc etc....unfortunately, I got owned in front of all my friends...they were like "you got OWNED"....the sad thing is, he doesn't know that real exhaust systems aren't made out of 100% pure aluminum...buncha ignorant dumb*****

If it only happens under load, and low RPM's, could be a leak.
