Bose System.....Warranty or TSB?

I have a Gold Preferred Extended Warranty, and need to get the bose replaced for a 3rd time. Stealership told me it would not be covered under warranty. Is this a service issue that would be covered under a TSB or some sort of recall?

A TSB is not a warranty or a recall, it is merely something that has been recognized as a common problem and is issued to give techs general guidelines on how to fix it. Kinda like a memo I guess.

Here it is for the Bose, btw: http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/NTB03-017.pdf

As far as I know, if its not covered under the extended warranty, and if not a recall, then ya gotta fork over the cash.

Thanks for the info Joel. I'm starting to get fed up with this thing. I can usually just smack the side of my console to get it to cut back on, but I'm getting really tired of doing that. I'm going to present this printout to the dealership and see if they'll replace it again. Thank you again!

lol....that'd be nice, I feel we need to do something to get these guys to cooperate. i took her in last week for my SES light, and asked about the VTC and Cam timing and everything. They are saying that everything checks out 100%. I'm not sure how much of that I believe, probably going to get a second opinion from Nisstech. When are you going up there?

it's not on now. it's intermittent, and not sure what triggers it. it'll come on every 4-5 weeks, and stay on for a few days or so, then go back off.

My Bose is cutting out also. It will be at like 19 or so and then all of a sudden it will get really loud and then go back down. I think I might just get a new headunit.

Called up the dealer, and said that it's not a Warranty issue as far as I'm concerned cause I have the printout of the Service Bullentin in my hand. I can make it act up for you if you'd like, because the last time I brought it in, you said the speakers never cut out. They told me to bring it in and bring the printout tomorrow, and they'll set me right.

Once again, you've been a huge help........Preciate It.

That actually might just be your SVC setting. It increases the volume by measuring your speed, road conditions, and noise I believe. Your setting might be on "High". You can change it by going via the Audio button, and you can turn this feature off if you'd like.

This might or might not be your case, but try it out and see.

I think someone has taken it apart before, and found a strip behind the face on the top part of the unit, was what is messing up. I don't have a link to that thread, and have searched a minute for it. I'm sure it's out there if I'm not mistaken.

This is going to be a bit long,...but I recently checked into this with my local Nissan dealer and this is what happened.

I purchased my maxima on Sept. 11 2004 pre-owned (under 36k miles), but opted to get the extended warrenty. I had the Bose HU replaced shortly after I bought the car with no problems (didnt have to pay anything) since it was still under the "bumper to bumper" factory warrenty. Well, after 11.5 months and 20k miles later, it started to do the same thing as before; i.e. speakers went out on left side while playing CDs only. I called my local Nissan Dealer and told them what was going wrong with the HU and that I wanted it to be replaced under warrenty. They said that since it was after the 12month/12k miles that the part was not under warrenty anymore. I said "Understood, but I have the Gold Plus extended warrenty. Doesnt that cover it?" He said it depends when I got the car, because the warrenty has not always covered the Bose HU. He said that the Gold Plus warrenty does not cover the HU, but Nissan recently (March '04) changed their policy stating that they now do cover it. I said cool...since I didnt purchase til 09. 04 I should be covered. He said true, however, the way they did my warrenty, it technically wasnt going to work. I was confused. I learned that the Gold Plus warrenty that I purchased was actually an extension of the origionally owners warrenty. Soooo, instead of my warrenty date starting on 09.11, the date I puchased, it started the date the origional owner purchased the car. I said thats bull...then why did I pay full price for the warrenty when actually I shouldve been pro-rated a discounted price since Im really just getting the "remainder" of the warrenty up to 100k. I told them I have a point since the origional owner and me both paid full price for the warrenty at one time. They technically sold one warrenty and charged two people for it. I was mad since the origional date of warrenty purchase was 10.19.03 or something,....definately before the "revised warrenty date" of March '04. I *****ed and griped until they finally gave in and ordered me another HU. They said that I would have to pay the $50 deductible though which was fine with me. However, its been about a month since they "ordered" it and Im getting a bit pissed. If they dont give me a call soon telling me that its in, Im gonna make someone have a bad day. So...I appoligize for the long post, but I though my info would be helpful. Best of luck with everyone with this problem. Oh yeah, I told them that this is seems to be a frequent problem among maxima owners and that theres a TSB out there for it and he laughed stating that TSBs mean nothing. He said a TSB doesnt mean that they have to fix it, it just means that it is recognized as a frequent problem. Whatever the hell that means....Good luck to the many with this problem. If I had more money and didnt mind getted screwed I wouldve just said forget about it and went with an aftermarket HU, but I thought it was necessary that Nissan definately NOT get away with this BS.

Sounds pretty much like my situation Mike, and I'm definately not going to stop until I get a new one. **** man, I waited 4 months after they ordered my last one til it came in. Apparently, the azzhole that was suppose to order it didn't, so 2 months later of calling in and checking on it, I got fed up also and walked in there to find out that it was never ordered. I'll be all up in their face this time. I'm bringing my TSB and Gold Preferred Warr. information as ammo. If that doesn't work, I'll just use my trusty temper.

Yeah, he was my service dude that Ben shifted me off to. He's gone now as of a few weeks ago. His replacement, Justin seems alright but I won't give him kudos yet till I see some sheit start happening.

WTF you POS Nissan!!!

So I go to the dealership, guy tells me same bs about it not being covered and the TSB is just to make them aware of the issue, but it's not a recall so they don't have to cover it. I said ok give me the number to Nissan and I'll call them. So I do, and I call them right in front of him. They tell me ALL my audio components are cover under my extended warranty. He goes to his Warranty Specialist Hoe and comes back and they said Nissan gave me false information, and they won't cover it...........

Long story short, I escalated the issue with Nissan and waiting on a specialist at HQ to call me back. I don't care if it is a radio, I'm pissed and I've had sheity service from day one. I'm not letting this one down. Retards!!

Just venting.....and FYI....

Update:
So I just got off the phone with the parts department at Action Nissan and asked them about the Bose HU they were supposed to order for me 6 weeks ago. Well....they never cease to amaze me. They tell me that it was received 5 weeks ago but they didnt have a contact number to reach me at so they just sent it back....I said "WTH....I havent changed my number and Ive received calls from you all before!!" I bet those idiots never ordered it. Anyways, they said that they would order a new HU and would call me when it came it. I better get a call soon or they are going to get one hell of a negative comment card from me. Anyhow, I thought Id update everyone concerned with this issue.

Wow, you just totally triggered a recall point in my fiasco. This is the exact samething they told me to the Tee on my first order.....Do they have this sheit scripted out for all stealerships? They said they got mine in but didn't have my number and couldn't get a hold of me. Although, when they wanted me to pickup my car and pay for an alignment that I took it in for, they did have any issues 411ing me.....

Dude from Nissan Motors still hasn't called me back.

Anyrate, good luck with your hu.

Did you try taking it appart and looking for a short? Or maybe ground the ground wire that comes from the radio better.

I've have yet to do that. There was a thread somewhere where someone took the face off and found that the (looks like cpu ide cable but smaller) wires that is mounted from the face to the unit itself was the culprit. If I recall, the connection point there was bad, not sure if it was a short or the wire itself. I don't think there was a fix to this though. I'm going to check the ground again, but it's definately in the hu. If I smack the side of my console pretty hard the speakers will come back on.

I'm still looking for that thread.... was it specifically a thread on its own or was it embedded in some other thread?

Damn... I didn't think it'd be this hard. Can't seem to find any good key words to search for. Any ideas?

As it turns out, both the tweeter and woofer continue to generate sound, but at a reduced level and with a lot of distortion. I previously thought the tweeter had zero output, but I was wrong. When this situation occurs, changing tracks on the CD does not resolve the problem. However, switching CD's or switching to the radio does. After switching CD's, the problem will recur. I have never seen the problem while listening to the radio. I will be going back to the dealer to try and get a new head unit.
