Computer Drive Cycle

I just tried to get my emissions tested and it failed b/c the SES light is on due to the 1320 ignition misfire code. Apparently, if I disconnect the battery, the computer will still need to go through a drive cycle which they said could take 1-2 weeks before it is ready to be tested again. The car drives fine and I would hope to reset the computer and get it tested quickly but the light usually comes back on with in two weeks of me disconnecting the battery. Anybody know how long the drive cycle takes?

I think he's talking about readiness tests. after the ecu is reset, or your codes are erased, the ecu goes through a series of test to check different functions of the emissions equipment. I recall something like Hold rpms at 3000 for 2 minutes, drive on highway at **mph for **minutes, pull over hold rpms for ** minutes. I read it somewhere. This keeps you from clearing a code in the parking lot of the emissions place, haveing it done and passing.

If I remember correctly

The CPU has to run a series of tests before it can use all sensors to operate the engine properly. How long it takes depends only on you driving style. One of my old threads got instructions on how to do that as quick as possible. I’m ganna post the link if I’ll be able to find it.

lol actually, when I’ve been tring to fix my car to pass inspection (I did not notice that there was something wrong with the car) I ended up cleaning injectors, replacing one O2 sensor and MAF
However, at the end the car felt probably twice as powerful. Without inspection I would never have found out that my car is not producing as much power as it is supposed to.

True ... but I had a ghost code for about 2 years (KS) and kicked myself ( I still manage about 2-3 kicks per day) because when I changed it, Christ .. felt like a new car .. kinda like all the recent posts in the 5g forum 'New MAF, Feels like new car!' ...

start the car cold, let it warm up. do some easy acceleration up to 45 and higher and back to zero. get on a freeway and cruise for as long as traffic permits (maybe 30-45 minutes or so), drive back home, shut the car off and let it cool off.

anyone with a generic OBD-II scanner can tell you which ready flags have been set, and which youll need to complete. if you have something that isnt bad enough to throw a fault, it still might not set the ready status (O2s slow response, for example).

I reset my ECU right before doing the smog check. It failed too. I drove it for about 40mins in traffic, and it worked. So all those extra steps seem unnecessary

they seem so, but just because it only took you 40 minutes, doesnt mean everyone else will. sometimes it takes a day or two.

i like your username, tho

I could live with a day or two, but not with those tedious instructions. Who knows, maybe they do work too.

Thanks. The username explains a lot of car troubles I often have

usually driving for a day or two will allow the above conditions and the flags to set at one point or another.
