Help with brake issues.. Caliper problems?

Hey guys, I'll get straight to the point.

I took my 2000 Max SE to my local mechanic to check out the hissing sound from my rear brakes, he took a quick look at them, told me that the rear calipers are "frozen" and that it was a common occurence with this gen max, I don't know about that. He showed me the rotors, and it was visually evident that they were uneven, so I'd have to replace the rotors, the brake pads, and also the calipers.

Now, he quoted me on the job to an estimated $600, this includes parts and labor for the entire rear brake work. Involves new caliper setup, brake pads, rotors, and labor.

I just want to know if this sounds like the right price? Also I was searching the internet at some of the auto parts websites, and found a few caliper listings, but they show so many listings, like calipers and caliper kits, what exactly do I need to replace as far as calipers go for frozen caliper issues?

I also want to replace all rotors with the slotted rotors from customenterprise, and hawk pads from custom enterprise.

Any advice is good advice, thanks all.

Mine were also "frozen". So I took them apart, cleaned them, lubricated where needed lubrication, put on a new set of pads and they have been working perfectly since. I did not need new rotors.

you need a loaded caliper pair.

labor for one axle shouldnt exceed 2 hours. its the same amount of work to replace pads as it is calipers, and if theyre replacing the rotors, it takes less time than it does to machine them. theres no reason they shoudl exceed 2 hours.
at $90, this puts you at $180ish meaning $420 for 2 calipers, rotors and pads.

does that sound about right?

ill get part prices.

holy crap... i show calipers at $415 each.

was that quote for two calipers? were they aftermarket calipers? (which would be cheaper, obviously).

if they were aftermarket, will they give you the same guarantee on parts and labor as they would with OEM stuff?

oh, n/m... i just noticed this wasnt a dealer.

whats the labor rate and amount breakdown vs parts?

You can clean everything, using a bench grinder with a wheel brush, change the seal, hardware, pads, then just lubricate the slidder where the pads slide re-assemble and call it a days. It will cost you maybe 100$ + the rotors if they need to be replace, that is quite easy to do and save a lot, if you are not shure ask a skilled friend to help you, it take me no more than 1 hours per side to do a perfect brake jobs. Good luck

or get some calipers from a junkyard for like$30 each.....or rebuild yours. You don't need "new" ones, and you can have the rotors turned. Tell your mechanic to take a hike.

You can make the old crappy caliper look brand new, you just need to find a shop that can sandblast them, it should cost you no more than 25-30$ per complete set.
