Yes another MAF question But could someone Help confirm my problem!

HEy guys,

My car has been sluggish for the past couple of weeks. The simptoms got worst yesterday because when I was crusing on the highway at 60mph and wanted to go 75mph I stomped on the gas pedal (auto) and my RPMs would not jump over 3000 RPM. At 60 MPH it was at 2500rpm and when I stomped on it it would slowly and I mean slowly climb up to 3000 RPMs and thats it.
I searched this site for answers and from the symtoms I believe something is probably wrong with my MAF. However, the SES light is not on.

SO could someone help confirm that it is my MAF before I bring it to my local repair shop.

Thanks!

It's most likely the MAF, but don't take the car to a repair shop. Give Dave Burnette a call to order one. If you can turn a screw driver you can install it yourself.

Yeah but thats why I want someone to confirm it first before I order the part. I don't want to be stuck with the part like someone I read on the org. Someone on the org. purchased a new maf too see if that was the problem and it ended up not being the problem nd he sold it in the classified section.
Isn't there a way that a repair shop can check to see if the Maf is bad?

Try cleaning it first. If you still have problems, order a new one from DaveB.

What is Dave B's number or his Org. name? Do we get discounts from ordering it from him?

oh, I forgot to mention that when I have the car in park and I rev the engine the needle does jump past 3000 RPM without a problem. But when I rev the engine when I am going 60MPH it doesn't rev past 3000RPM. Is this weird?

i'm interested... how do you clean it?

my car yesterday BOBBLE through the RPMS and i couldn't even drive... had to pull over and check it. i ended up unplugging the batt and MAF for 15 mins and it was fine. felt like a horrible wheel bearing that's been driven on for 2 years!

Take a Q-tip and some isopropyl alcohol or electric parts cleaner. Remove the MAF from the intake with the star security tool. Gently wipe the filament looking piece (see all the dirt/grease on your Q-tip). Allow to dry and replace. It's that simple and may save you some dough.

I found this from 2002 Maxima SE's previous replies to another thread. Some say it doesn't work and some say it does. I will probably wait until my Maf is really gone before I buy a new one.

This should be made a sticky--

Put some Cascade or Palmolive oil in your dishwasher and put the MAF in there for bout 30 min, throughtly clean the MAF. After that put it in the a preheated oven for 20 min at 475F to dry it off. Works every time.

Seriously do we need 100000 MAF threads on this forum ? Read the dayamn stickies !

I'm going to try the microwave. I'm sure I can cut the time in half.

You can use throttle body cleaner or rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. Just be very gentle with it.

You can buy it at any automotive store. You will need it to clean the MAF, otherwise it will be tough to reach it.

Try to find someone with the same car and swap sensors. It's an easy job and "non invasive" to either car. You should know right away if it's the MAF or not.

Well I use my fiancee as a dishwasher (wife will do just fine in this application), so I really wouldnt know how good a Maytag would clean the MAF out. In order to get the MAF dry again you can put it on a cooking tray- make sure to spray it down with PAM (non stick spray) and put it in the oven. I don't recomend microwave as the MAF has some metal parts inside that will spark.

BTW how did you solder the MAF togheter ? There really is no room to solder it as the Hot wire element isn't exposed enough, unless you got a microscopic solder then good for you.

HM you might wanna make sure your fuel pump is still supplying enough gas and It might just be a combination of both the fuel pump and MAF because low fuel supply and bad MAF makes a SLOW maxima
