Throttlebody Cleaning instructions
Throttlebody Cleaning instructions
Are these the instructions for the 4th gen or 5th gen? (or both)?
If not 5th gen, does anyone have a write up of this?
Thanks

I just wanted to comment that I have a 2K2 and I cleaned my TB quite some time ago before all of the horror stories got posted on the ORG and all worked out okay for me. I got a CEL right after I finished but I think this is because I unplugged the MAF without disconnecting the battery. I reset the ECU and the CEL never came back. I also had a high idle for a while but the throttle position learning procedure or whatever it's called fixed that and it has been fine ever since.
I am not saying it is a good idea and I am not sure I would do it again, but to say that "cleaning your TB in a 5.5 gen will wreck it" is not correct.

Be very cautious when cleaning the 5.5 gen throttle body...or better yet, just don't attempt at all....theres too many people in the 5th gen forums with messed up TBs after cleaning it up...
I personally have been a lucky guy to not break my TB....but my procedure was kinda different from others...I took apart the whole IM (including the TB still connected) off the whole engine...then very gently press against the butterfly plate slightly open...then start spraying the **** out of it....the liquid will flow out of the IM runners so have a rag under it to catch the fluid....it worked great and no SES or high idle...but I'm not sure if I am gutsy to try it again

Manually moving the butterfly value while cleaning our (5.5gen) TBs is where people run into problems. Luckily, after I did that I was able to reset my CEL with no futher problems.

I actually started the procedure by manually moving the butterfly valve, but I didn't think that "felt" right, so I finished by turning the key to the car on and propping the gas pedal to the floor to keep it fully open. I am not sure if this is a good idea or not but it is what I did.
I just had the dealer do a TB cleaning on my 5.5 and I got a SES light the next morning. There is actually a TSB that says if you have a idle that is faster than 25 rpms of what it should be after it is warmed up after you clean the TB on the 02-03's you have to check the ECU program and reset the IVAL with the consult. This will make it idle right. Mine was actually retarding my timing down to 12. I would think reseting the ecu with the pedal thing might work too but that is the cause.
Yeah it definitely feels perkier. I run Toyos and I usually can only get them to break loose briefly from 1 to 2 and yesterday I rolled them good on the same shift. Typically those tires really grab quickly. Good thing to do while it is in for service for the extra 150 bucks. I am pleased.
