I bought my 2K Max with 20K on it (lease return). When I first got it, it was getting 20-22 mpg. Since I have owned her I have only put in Mobil's 93 octane. I have noticed an increase in power and yesterday, when I filled the tank I am now officially at 27.1 mpg. Anyone else noticed a change similar to this. Driving habits have not changed at all...

That's really good gas mileage. Just curious, is it mostly from freeway driving?

What conditions do you drive in? IE Stop and go or constant speed freeway? How often do you attempt kills (that really drops MPG down! )

Sounds great! At $2 - $3 per gallon for premium and 80 miles per day round trip I need all the MPG I can get!

Set your trip odometer to 0 when you fill up. the next time you get gas, divide the miles on your trip odometer by the amount of gallons you put in your tank from the pump...

It's usually 300 miles and 14.3 gallons so I get around 21 mpg

I'm around there too. I'm rather amazed at the 27 mpg. Congrats.

I took a roadtrip last weekend to NC. I got 24.1 MPG on the way down in heavy traffic, including stop and go. I got 27.1 on the way back (includes some after the trip city driving.) My usual city driving (Wash DC suburbs) I usually get 18-19.

Two weeks ago I did a road trip to WV. After the 900 mile round trip and 2 tankfulls of premium/mid grade gas mix, I calculated an average of 29mpg. Almost all highway, averaging 70~75mph.

I used to get 27 mpg, mostly backroads driving constant 40's. After I had the fuel cut probable adjusted at dealer, the mpg went down to about 25 mpg. Was so excited at the 27 mpg but the 25 is still pretty good though.

I get a nice 27-28mpg driving from Long Island to Albany at a nice easy constant 60mph.

At 20K miles.. my car does much better on gas mileage.. but as I have said before.. the power seems down.

I think I'll get a new one in 2003

I'm exactly the same - but then I only drive 5 miles each way to work in decent traffic (takes 20 minutes) so I'm sure that contributes to the really low mileage.

I hear that

I get about 21 AT BEST! I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Maybe I'm too aggressive or whatever, but MAN! This car is REALLY burning a hole in my wallet! AH well, that's what you get when you feed this much speed to your ride I guess

I have a 4th gen and I'm lucky to get 21-22 mpg normally but on a recent trip from Toronto to Georgia cruising most of the way at roughly 75 mph, I was able to get 800 kms (500 miles) on a tank of gas. I think that works out to a little over 30 mpg. I was pleasantly surprized.

I only have 900 miles on my Maxima SE so far and in the 3 times ive filled up ive gotten 15.2 gallons for 210 miles the 1st. 15.3 gallons for 225 miles the 2nd time and the last was 15.1 for a whopping 237 miles. Thats only around 14-15 mpg and im babying the car during the break-in period. Hope it gets better with time!

BTW, i live in Northeast Philadelphia and drive only 4 miles to work, so that doesnt help either.

In my Accord V6 (slushbox only ) I manage to get a consistent 27.0-27.2mpg on all highway driving at 75-80mph (or more) including occasional full-throttle passes around morons and idiots while hauling around my 270lb-self and 30lb of luggage. So that's about the same as you guys with automagics. I can put 87 in mine though, so that saves me a couple bucks at the pump

Man!!! Rub it in when gas is $2 a gallon. My brother has always used regular in his '95 Maxima, even though it calls for 91. He has close to 200,000 on his car too. So much for the regular gas destroying your engine theory.

Common Trend

So it looks like there is a bit of a trend in terms of MPG...

The 5-speeds are lower than the automatics (expected)
The more hwy, the better. (also expected)

I am getting 26-27 with "moderate" driving. A typical week for me is 50 miles/day hwy and 20 city.

I get about 23.5 mpg consistently...and that's because I tend to get frustrated with the "intelligence-challenged" drivers on Interstate 45 north of Houston, and have to run them over a lot. When I'm just back form vacation, and thus impervious to idiots, I get around 24.5-25, on a (95% highway) commute of 45 miles each way.

thats good mileage

i drive freeway most of the time and sometimes local (about 15% of the time) and i only get aboout 20 MPG even with all that freeway driving, thats BAD considering my 99 GXE average around 27 MPG.

I'm a little suprised

I was avg about 22-23 mpg when I had about a 7 mile commute to work each day and that was a steady diet of premium gas 92+ always.

Well I got married a month ago and my commute is now 90 miles each way! Yeah thats right ....180 big ones per day....so....

I was planning on dumping the Max and getting an Accord because I was getting nuked by the gas prices....I figure I'm gonna sell the Max so now it gets a steady diet of 87 and you know something? It runs better than it ever has and today I calculated over 27 mpg....not to bad for a 6 cylinder. That is traveling from the Cape thru Boston to the North Shore 5 days a week. Usually avg about 80-90 on Rt 3 but of course hit stop and go in town.......

the downside is the car is getting the **** beat out of it by rocks and racking up some miles REAL quick...the paint chips are hideous(Nissan Jap paint just sucks) and the windshield has chips everywhere.

But...I'll post a new thread on commuter options.....

27 mpg on 87...not going back to Premium..uh uh nope

i just recently got a 2001 Max and am getting around 20 mpg. I'm also shifting anywhere between 3-4K rpms so i figure that's not bad at all.

Steve here likes to point this out a lot.

I did some calculations, and at 15K miles a year @ 23mpg, is 652 gallons of gasoline. 93 octane costs me $0.20 per gallon more than 87 octane. That comes out to a whole $130 a year it'd save me.

I think the max is worth $130 a year over an accord *any* day.

(And to those who insist that 87 octane is good enough, is saving 'bout $87 per 10,000 miles worth the risk? Yeah, your knock sensor takes care of it, but what if the sensor goes out? I can limp home w/93 octane, but wouldn't want to with 87 octane. And with my luck, Nissan would test my gas and void my warranties...)

It is good read other peoples experience. My best so far is only 19mpg ('00 SE auto). Mostly stop and go in due to lights. R/T to work is less than 10 miles. I've check the tire pressure to make sure that is not why I can't break 20mpg. Does anyone know if the official mpg figures are with the a/c or automatic temp control on or off?
I have a 7 hour drive coming up later this month and will recheck my mpg. The problem is that on long highway drives I rountinely go 80-100 mph so I will probably still have a sub 20mph result.

Finally someone posts evidence that they use 87 without any problems. I can't stand the people who keep on saying that super must be used or the engine will explode, etc.. etc...

hmmm

wow... I'm reading some interesting stuff....
When I still had my max, I was getting no more than 14 miles per gallon! This is no way how I drove.. mostly city, then mostly highway, on only highway i calculated a best of 16 mpg once.. but ofcourse I know my car had problems..

I'm planning on getting a 4th gen soon, for now I'm driving my brothers 99 Corolla most of the time.. boy am I loving the gas milage I'm getting 28 mpg in the city/traffic with a very heavy foot, the car picks up speed so easily I'm amazed, but ofcourse it's ugly and tight inside.. Nissan should develop a hybrid Electric version of the VQ engine..
