Electrical problem?

symptoms: tachometer and speedometer needles fluttered and then went out, after the rest of my accessories went out(windows, radio, moonroof). it began with the instrument panel warning lights blinking, then the above following suit.

I was driving on the freeway when all of this happened, then when I hit the surface streets, my maxima just quit. no power, not even to restart the car. call AAA, get towed to pep boys and change out the battery(myself, of course).

that was a couple of days ago, now I am experiencing the same symptoms(E brake and battery light), so now I know it isnt the battery since I had just replaced it. what else could it be? alternator? loose ground, grounded out wires(I sure hope not)?

how hard is the install? I am more concerned with installing the serpentine belt, and I guess getting the timing correct? or is this an issue at all? not used to working on transverse engines...
