storing the max for 3 months?

well i'm storing the max for the 3 coldest months of winter. Is there anything i should do besides change oil and pull the battery to make sure she'll start ok in the spring?

If you have a heated garage, blast it to 90º.

Yeah just make sure you periodically start the car and let it run for a bit.

Get it some therapy as it will be confused and depressed because you aren't driving a FWD, four door econo-sporty car all year round.

In that case just unplug the battery and leave it at that. It will be fine through the winter. Just baby it when you start it in the spring.

Yep, you'll have to re-break it in then if you don't start it.

I have to leave my baby for a month from 20th december till 15th January in Jersey while I head to Australia for vacation.

Should i be taking any of these precautions?

on the fuel stabilizer and oil change, and let me add a couple more thoughts.

Get a good quality car cover. If power is readily available, I'd leave the battery connected and just hook it up to a battery tender. It will extend the life of your battery. Other than that, I'd spray some silicone on all the rubber seals to keep them from sticking and put dessicant inside the car to keep the interior dry (and thus keep it from molding). Don't engage the parking brake.

Make sure you turn it over(the engine, for any smart@sses out there) a few times each month and don't leave a lot of gas in the tank so it doesn't gum up.

i'll be leaving mine for 6 months when i go to afghanistan in 2 weeks
i'm leaving it on base and a buddy is gonna go start it up every couple weeks. hes also gonna drive it around base for a few minutes to keep everything moving the way its supposed to. i figure that better then just starting it and letting it idle. plus it will get the engine up to operating temp to keep the coolant moving

How will leaving a full tank of gas in there make it prone to gumming up?

also, i wouldn't think a fuel stabilizer would be needed for 3 months of storage right??

It doesn't make it prone to gumming up. Having less gas in the tank just decreases the chances of it gumming up.

I would recommend disconnecting the battery, leaving a half tank or less of gas, putting in fuel stabilizer and you should try to start it once in the middle of the winter and then when you take it out just give her a little while to warm up and get going before you drive her hard.

good luck,

-steve

Sooner... be EXTREMELY careful about leaving it on base somewhere. Unless it is under 24/7 guard detail, those lots are prone to vandalism and high amounts of theft (the people KNOW that you are gone for a long time). There have been several cases on a number of different bases of this... and a lot of time, it is from another unit on post that knows your deployment schedule.

Good luck in Afghanistan - going with a Guard unit, you can expect to see a lot of tower duty, ECP, or QRF. Not fun, but makes the time go by.

One thing not mentioned: run the A/C while you let it run. Sounds strange in the winter, but the hoses need to be kept moist so they don't dry out and crack come summer. Normally, the defroster use takes care of this for most people.

im leaving a checklist for the guy who will be driving it around a little. it will include full heater and full A/C. it will also keep the freon (spl?) good and keep all the vents from getting musty

whatever dude...you do exactly what I do in your job....but you'll be sitting IN a BUILDING in Kabul doing it in front of a computer there, instead of DC. You're a desk jockey just like me, except you have to wear a uniform while I can wear jeans and a t-shirt if I so desire

(and don't forget, I outrank you GG-13/132 = Air Force Major equivalent)

Whoa, wait... explain that to a friend of mine who was in a Humvee that got fragged by an IED... explain to him how your sitting behind a desk protected our country's freedom.
