As I was leaving school today, I put my 00 Maxima in reverse (its a manual by the way), I stepped on the gas with my foot still on the clutch, I let go of the gas for a couple of seconds then stepped on the gas. The car jerked then it stalled. Now I cant shift the gear into 1, 3, 4, 5, and reverse. My neutral is like in gear 1 because it moves. My car moves in neutral. I had to tow the car to my house. What do you guys think?

explain that again... you cant shift to first because youre already in first? you pushed the clutch in and revved the engine and then it jerked and stalled? without letting the clutch out? wow...


how many miles on the car? does the shifter move in to each gear with the engine off? how does the clutch feel?

 

Theres about 119K miles on it. It feels like the shifter is stuck on one gear. I can only shift it to 2nd gear when engine is off or on. The car moves with the shifter
in neutral. This is so wierd

 

well im not sure what to tell you but i had problems with my clutch and i couldnt get it into gear but that was because my master and slave cylinder in my clutch were gone. i had no resistance in the clutch and when they replaced those two things my xcar was back to being great.

 

linkage problem most likely. Not too expensive to fix and if you get into it, you might be able to fix it yourself.

 

hi I towed it to my auto mechanic today and I was told its a linkage problem in the trans. An estimate of $2500 - $2700 was given.
You said I could fix it. How?

And Im thinking of just buying another trans.
Any suggestions?

 

My 5 speed sometimes has issues too. At times i can't put the car in reverse but once i through it into 1st or second then it allows me to throw it into reverse. Anybody else have this problem?

 

my dads corvette wont let you go straight to reverse sometimes. i have to put it in another gear and then to reverse and it works like normal then

 

I have a question..I have a 2000 maxima gxe with 158,00 miles..whenever i put it on park or neutral the car makes a shuttering noise from the engine area..and then it shutts off, but when it's in drive it drives with no issues what so ever and very smooth....I had to post here since i cannot start a new thread..

check for vacuum leak or something.. i posted on mine and no one can help me. but to temporarily bypass it, i adjusted the throttle cable to let it idle higher. i am still in the process of checking mine.
check air/fuel, if u know where, check IAC valve/motor (idle air control) and if u know where that is, PM me and let me know. might be dirty and clogged/ stuck in place.

 

About 2 years ago I had a similar problem while backing up. The car stalled and the gears got all messed up. I managed to take off in 2nd gear and the problem vanished. A year later, my tranny died, the teeth of the gears in the tranny were gone.

I would suggest trying another mechanic for a price check, if it's still above a grand, you should just get another tranny. I purchased a used tranny and got it installed for about $1200. Tranny has shifted as smooth as butter ever since.

 

on ur tranny purchase, did u upgrade to a 6-speed? also, what shop did u go to. i wanna upgrade for better gear ratios!

 

I didn't get the 6speed! I wanted to get one with LSD but to do that, I had to do some mods to the axle. Anyway, I got my tranny from PA, you should check out the site below for the closest tranny to you.
