muffler/catback question

Hello,

I just put in Place Racing CAI in my 2000 SE(ca spec) and will be installing a Cattman y-pipe later this week.

I am mulling over buying a frankencar catback exhaust and the benefits that would give me (5-8hp?). I don't like the fact that the frankencar is so heavy. I considered a Cattman catback, but that was too loud for my tastes.

So... in place of a catback, I am wondering if upgrading to a 2001 model muffler would gain me about the same 5hp?

If so, is it just the 2001 muffler that would give me the gains, or would any 5th Gen muffler (after 2001) give me the same gains? Any fittment issues to be aware of?

Thanks

The cat back/muffler wont give any significant gains.

You'd be better off using an 5th gen muffler (00-03) and it will keep things quiet.

Keep your 2000 muffler and get a Frankencar or Cattman b-pipe. Since the b-pipes are 2.5" pipes, you may also want to look into getting a new inlet pipe of the same diameter, since IIRC the 2000-2001 piping is something like 1.75" to 2" in diameter. A custom shop should be able to do it for cheap.

Although not scientifically tested, I don't think the 01 or even 02-03 mufflers will give ya anything over your 00 muffler once you change the inlet pipe.

Btw, according to this, the b-pipe gained 6 whp over a stock b-pipe on a VQ30DE (set-up included a y-pipe already):

I would think it similar for you too.
