cold start idle problem with 2000 gle..

Hey again guys...
I am currently working on a friends 2000 gle with a cold start idle problem..Checked the computer for codes,nothing....Then i checked the spark plugs and they were pretty worn..

So i changed them, but it still idles like ****...The car will stumble pretty bad when idleing cold and will almost die,but it idles and drives just fine after it warms up...i did a search on this problem and come up with the maf being the culprit...

Any other thoughts..Thanks.

Not sure about the fix but I know mine does the same thing... I have checked my MAF, it's as clean as ever, and the last time I had it serviced it was fine, so I don't think this is the culprit!

Might be the coil packs.

and I know coil packs have been mentioned hundreds of times on here, where is the best place to get them? how do you know if they go bad, like what do you check for?

I read a bunch on the coil pack problem with the 2000 model, but from what i understand the coil pack/packs fails under load...The car does not stumble when you give it gas, only at cold idle...It doesn't do it after it warms up...

I just changed coil packs today because yesterday car started to idle very rough felt like the steering wheel will vibrate into my hands. Yesterday i had no SES light, today however i had all three TCS, SLIP, SES lights and the problem stayed the same after the engine was fully warm.

As I stated above, if your search has already revealed to you that the MAF is bad, replace the darn thing already and get on with it.

It's cheap insurance on a 2k. Price a 2k2 maf sometime.

In the (very long shot) event that the new MAF doesn't fix the problem, check for proper IATS and CTS operation. Problems with either of these sensors cause cold-start drivability issues.

I bought the coil packs along with the MAF, i will install the MAF very soon. I just had to install the coil packs first because they seemed to worry me most.
I dont have that rough idle after new coils went in.

2000 SE Stumbling

I own a 2000SE.The problem occurs only when cold. When I accelerate lightly (1800 rpm) it stumbles alot. I've replaced The MAF twice. The last being 13 months ago. I also had the coils replaced 8 months ago. What could be wrong?????

Fair enough.

Coil packs, CTS, IATS; thermostat stuck open; IACV sticking open; TPS malfunction
Even a vacuum leak can cause this problem.

Had cold stumble problems with my 2000 I30. Replacing all six coil packs did the trick. Also, make sure air filter is not dirty.

Cold engine operation problems could come from a bad Engine Coolant Temp sensor.
A MAF problem should not be temperture dependent.

So much info, but lets start with the basics, clean throttle body on vehicle.
Does idle speed change after wards ? 650-750 OK, any higher and you need to go to the dealership. Have them perform Idle Volume Learn, and reset Self-Learn. At the same time, have them check to see if you have to have the ECM Updated ?
Does symtom reoccur ? Yes, airflow meter and if the air flow meter's part # is for the 'countermeasure' then it will need to have an updated program loaded.(if not done already.)
BTW sounds like your intake manifold gasket or vacuum hose is leaking if its cold, and idles messed up, and gets better when warmed up.(*hint* both expand when warmed up.)

Good luck.

Thanks for all the help. I wanted to stay away from the dealer, but I guess I can't. The car does have a new air filter,MAF-13 months, new coils-8 months. Is this a common problem? ( stumbling when cold under light acceleration?)

Remove air box and tube spray a rag and clean the the throttle body, as the rag gets dirty flip to another side or if u can use another til u get all the carbon out.
