5.5 gen hood vibration/rattle

Just to clarify, I tried searching.
Your search - hood vibration site:http://forums.maxima.org/forumdisplay.php?f=10 - did not match any documents

I've noticed for a while at 40mph+ my hood will vibrate like it is loose. Nissan has a TSB regarding this, but I'd rather not spend 50-200$ to have the dealer correct this. Also, I believe I am getting a hood latch rattle off and on.

Has anyone else experienced the hood latch rattle and if so, how did you fix the problem.

Plus, has anyone fixed the hood vibration themselves?

Thanks.

There's a TSB on it, as you stated, but sometimes, if you play your cards right, you can get TSB's done for free

... read the stickies.

there are some rubber bump stops in the cars frame under the hood that you can unscrew a little bit to get a tighter fit and essentially stop the vibrations. I did this to my car and it has fixed it.

You could try ajusting those rubber bumpers, but you will most likely throw off the hoods flushness. I wonder if you can adjust the height of the latch? That would fix mine

Read the stickie's ---> the TSB is in there, and once you link to the TSB, it has a procedure to fix it.

I know what you posted. I gave you the TSB so that you could read it and see if its something that you could DIY or at least partially correct yourself.

No worries, I have the TSB printed. I just do not want to start ripping that hood insulation off and try to weld or glue things and end up making it worse.

I was asking if anyone here has fixed the problem on their own, and if so.. how.

The kit for the TSB costs like $20 at Nissan. Get it and apply it yourself. It helped a little in my case, but the shaking is still there.

You should probably pull the hood liner and check the joints like the TSB says. I had quite a few that were separated and glued them back. Also, as others on here have done, take some electrical tape and wrap it around the latch as well as adjust the latch itself all the way down and level the hood up with the rubber bumpstops. I also bought weather stripping from Advance and made my own headlight packs and also put a strip under the center of the hood where it sits above the grill. Did this fix it completely? No. Did it help? Yes. The hood doesnt seem to raise and flutter as much as it did. You just want to get the hood as tight as possible, especially if you're not going to pull the liner.

You don't have to throw off the flushness of the hood by doing it this way. Just use care when doing it to align it evenly.

progress

I twisted those rubber stops 3 turns upward. This morning on the way in to work, I did not notice ANY hood vibrations nor the rattle noise. However, there is a slight gap around the headlamp area and the hood.

The electrical tape on the latch is great. Immediatly stoped my vibration. I would leave those rubber bumpstops alone, put them back and try the tape, 3 or 4 times around and you will be set without that gap...

Just turn up the volume if you got a system. You won't hear it then maybe.

And you could leave the sun shade in the windshield so you won't see it moving around either

I just did the quick fix and turned those rubber bumpers. Perhaps this weekend, I'll wrap the latch with the electrical tape. Thanks for all the helpful tips.

Also, anyone noticing the email notifications are about a day late?
