im looking to buy a 2k3 max. i kno our 4thgen has problems w/ knock/o2 sensors, but thats pretty much it. what about the 5.5gen? wat common problems should i be looking for? if you had to get it fixed, roughly how much did it cost? thanks

MAF is all i consider being a real problem. In my opinion a stock 03 maxima is pretty much trouble free. I've always believed modding cars causes problems. I think the bearings only go bad on dropped max's and when i had my 02 auto i didn't have any problems with the tranny.

How about cam and crank sensors....? Can you explain that ?

How is a dropped car affect a wheel bearing ?

Cam/crank sensors was a recall. Most cars have some sort of recall by the manufacturer. And dropping your car to low will cause damage to the wheel bearings.........as well as other front end parts..Leave the car alone and enjoy trouble free motoring.....

03's seem to be the 'better' of the A33B's.

63,400 miles.

Some might say it's the luck of the draw, other's might not,a nd say all or most have some sort of crap go out.

I can vouch for the the Bose, happens every-now-and-again, the creepy hood movement at highway speeds, and the wind noise from the sunroof. But all these are covered in the stickys/how-to, and shouldn't take you more than an afternoon to fix.

My tranny VB was being , so I replaced the VB and it's been fine since.

MAF is good, CmPS, CrPS are good so far, no oil being burned, bearings/struts fine.

Out of frustration with my 2K3 I'll say this...
Try and find one that has just one interior thing that "does not rattle"...
If you find one with say less than a dozen or so rattles, buy it!

Good luck finding one that doesn't rattle!

I haven't had any problem with my old 02 or my 03. I had my 02 for 2 years and my 03 for a couple months.

Those of you that are claiming " no problems"....How many miles ? I put 80k into my 2k2 before it got wrecked. I had continous problems throught my ownership of the vehicle. It's nice to drive a car now , where I don't know anyone in the service department.

47,000 miles on my 2k2. One 02 sensor went bad. Other than that, I have had no problems. Original MAF (with Injen), original tranny (6 speed), no bearing issues (D2 coilovers).

Kloogy, how many miles have you put on the Stang? Glad to hear you've had no problems.

Stock 03 Max GLE with 15k miles to date. No problems and no rattles, except for the backshelf holding the subwoofer when the bass is turned up high. My only complaint is that the transmission hesitates for a split second during acceleration. Dealer said it is normal due to electronic drive by wire. My 3rd and 4th gen Max didn't do that.

That's because they have cable driven throttle.

47,200 on my 2k2, no issues with anything other than the Bose. Original MAF (with Berk K&N), original tranny, no bearing issues (Illuminas/Progress).

No problems or issues with my 02 with 39K on it other than one of the light bulbs in the climate control burnt out about a month ago. The SES light comes and goes on its own once in awhile.

43k on my 02 and the only problem I had was with my MAF sensor around the 5k mark. My non-Bose HU went bad two years ago but, it was nothing that my current Kenwood HU couldnt remedy.

The car's a beast and built like a tank. Qualifier: I bought my 02 NEW back in in early 2002.

125k on my 2002. No serious problems, nothing that wasn't maintenance at least. Zero. You can't beat the VQ, no joke.

new tranny

Have 43K on my 03 and it is in the shop for a new auto transmission. Had slippage from 2nd-3rd and one night had no reverse. Free, can't complain.
I'm right on pace. A 98 max that I had went for a new tranny at 50k.

I have ~75k miles on my 2003. No problems with the car. It's stock under the hood.
All i have done is maintenance(oil, brakes, tires, flushes) and 1 recall. Runs smooth and QUIET with my new Turanza tires. Almost ZERO rattles after 75k miles. Not bad.
