Myself along with most of the Toronto guys with coilovers coat our coilovers with CRT Rust Inhibitor which is pretty difficult to find but you can try parts or tool stores. It basically puts a thick coat over them and repells moisture & salt from getting to the metal parts. I just checked my Ksports today after 2+ months of winter and they look mint.
In the spring I plan on removing the coilovers and scrubbing off the CRT coating with soap & water.

Yeah the Gibbs penetrating oil is good stuff. The CRT stuff isn't a penetrating oil though, it's just something that would be good to use once you've cleaned off all the rust/corrosion, and you want to seal them up for winter. It's sort of like a really good clear coat for your coilovers.
One of my friends also had the JIC A1's and after 1 winter they were ruined and he had to send them back to JIC to be repaired for use in spring. I don't think he protected them with anything though.
