performance help

i want to add some power to my 02 6spd and not spend an enormous amount of money... is purchasing aftermarket bolt ons such as a b-pipe be worth the expense when installed with the rest of the exhaust remaining stock???

No, Best bang for the buck is HotShot Headers.

A B-Pipe might add at most 5whp, not noticable at all. Where as the headers will add around 20whp, nice noticable difference.

Headers will cause a CEL if you do not simulate your secondary o2 sensors, very easy to do and cheap. Some extended the wires, but it is much easier to simulate them and less chance of a CEL.

You can use the rest of your stock exhaust and it will in no way damage your MAF.

i am guessing a shop would charge me an arm and leg to install the headers and do the 02 sensors

depends on where you go...

Many installed them themselves. If you go this route, you can see if there are any local Org members willing to help you install them. The o2 sim is really easy.

I am lucky enough that my brother is a mechanic so he helped me install mine with his lift at work. Took us three hours I think and his boss only charged me $100.

try startin with some sort of intake(anything but stock) and a y-pipe, that will help you feel something and wont be $800 like headers. i got my intake and y-pipe for probly just 400 or so. try that first.

An intake will provide no noticeable gains. Only an audible difference.

You won't feel any difference with having or not having an intake with an aftermarket exhaust. You will most likely not even notice an increase with a catback or very little.

Hey

Well you can get a set of headers and an intake. Then go get the car tuned by a speed shop. Thats what I would do. Also, if your cat was to go, I would replace it with a High Flow cat.

The dyno might show about 10 whp from an intake and a b-pipe, but that's not enough for you to really feel when actually driving the car, IMO.

HotShot headers are $550 Shipped from SCO...

The stock intake is pretty good, I went with the Berk for look and sound.

Not to mention that a Y-Pipe will have less of an impact on an 02-03 because they do not eliminate the Pre-Cats.

An intake and y-pipe might add a bit of noticable power, but nothing close to headers.

I was thinking the same thing, I want a little performance with little money...Anyone feel anything with lightweight pully? Im thinking if I were to get headers down the road that I would also have the shop put a pully on for me too.

can anyone tell me how to "simulate an o2". I have a 2000, fed spec y-pipe, and didn't really recognize much gain. Besides i'm throwing o2 codes every few months and after clearing from autozone they dont come up for a while. Not sure if i really need a new O2.

Some help will be greatly appreciated. I would love my stuff to work correctly.

What O2 codes are you throwing? Front or rear? You can only simulate the rear O2s. Go here for more info: www.O2sim.com

I don't have a y-pipe nor timing advance, so I wouldn't know. You tell us.

Btw, no before and after time slip, no care.

I had an exhaust and intake on my vw jetta. It adds no noticable difference. It may so on the dyno but not enough for your butt dyno to notice. Waste of money in my opinion. The noise got so unbearable that I end up taking it off........If your not gonna do headers then leave the car stock

how much hp from a y-pipe 5-10 hp. If you can feel 5-10 hp you have a vivd imagnation......

And VW has way more aftermarket support and the jetta had way more bolt ons to increase hp. But it was a piece of unreliable garbage......

support means jack, a 300zx doesnt have much support either but a stock tt will put somethin like 300 to the wheels... ppl have dyno'd intake+y-pipe at 20hp increase at the wheels, would you be able to feel that? trust me, you can feel it. i mostly felt bottom end even though some people say they dont think that is increased, but o well. i liked the increase and ill stick with it. thx

Can you link those Dynos??? I would love to see a 5.5gen gaining 20whp from a y-pipe and intake.

Thanks for the help. I get the familiar p0420 and most the time just ignore it. I'm sure its related to have my ypipe but I havent updated my ECU which some say will fix it

Are you CALI spec and do you have an aftermarket y-pipe?

Headers just break a 20whp gain, you think a y-pipe that keeps the Pre-Cats and an intake is going to get anywhere near 20Whp? It has also been proven that intakes barely make a 5whp gain (very few).

If you use ricer math you get a 15whp gain, realistic numbers are near 10-11whp.

I will give you, it may, MAY get near 20hp on a 00-01 5th gen. Since the y-pipe can gain 15whp since it eliminates the pre-cats. But on a 5.5gen, no way.

Thanx for all the replies...honestly i am straying away from an intake for the moment b/c one i dont want to drill the hole required by the cai and two i dont like the loss of low end torque associated w/ intakes...i am seriously considering the hottshot headers based on what everyone is telling me however i am somewhat worried about bringing my car to a shop and getting them to do the header install and o2 sensor work

its all about breathing, not just them on their own. with an intake, you can breathe in a lil better, but cant breathe out any better. with an exhaust you cant breathe in but you can breathe out good. but with both, it frees up intake and exhaust so the results are compounding, better in and out = better than just in + out.
