Well i live around philadelphia, and this past saturday night we had very heavy snow. I came back from work and parked my perfect max behind my three other cars because there was no other parking spaces left. (I live in a town house). In the morning i wake up and look outside my window and i see a car backed up into my maxima. I run downstairs and outside and the guy explained to me what happened.

He was trying to back out of his parking spot, but he was getting no traction.....so he floored his car and suddenly got traction and he braked immediately. There was still bout 3' inches of snow, so his car slipped and his trunk ran right into my rear driver side door.

I just wanted to share this with all the fellow .org members and see what you guys thought. I got a estimate on the repair and it came out to be $1,242.00
And yeah the person who hit my car is paying for everything. He didnt want to go through insurance but i still have his info. So for 1200 bucks, dont you guys think i could get a new door? any advise or thoughts are welcome.

thank you for your interest,
Avais.

Wow, looks like you would need a new door. That would be around $1200. lol J/K that would be that much if you'll buy it from the stealer ofcourse. Well try to look for the door at some autopart.com place do some research and I'm pretty sure you can find one for around $400. It's might not going to be new, it could be used but in good condition.

Dude. Give him a short deadline. You gotta get the money quick or kiss it goodbye. I would say a week or less.

Too many people get burned trying to be a nice guy and not reporting it to the insurance.

Good Luck

That looks a lot like Hidden Valley is that where you're at? I used to live there when i was about 5.

Sorry about what happened, as stated above collect that money quick and find a used good condition door itll be much cheaper than a new one

My car got hit recently as well by a tow truck and the tow company paid for my Maxima’s repairs out of pocket. All I did was go to the auto body shop, got a quote and faxed it to them. A week later it was in the shop getting fixed. They even paid for the rental car. That’s one thing to remember, remind the guy that he also has to pay for your rental, which is at least going to be 5 days.

Get 3-5 estimates, give him the highest 3. And do the average of all of them. Ask him to just give you the money for it. Try to avoid him paying the shop directly. Take that money, and go to www.car-part.com Buy the cheapest one possible, and hopefully it'll be the same color. Go to the bottom of your results page and click on the page with the *. That page will be the lowest priced ones on the list. You can sort locally also, but I like searching nationwide to see if it's feasible to have something shipped. Here's one of the examples I found:

2001
Rear Door
Nissan Maxima INS-NICE,,,SE,,,,GLD
519201 $248.98
All Pro Used Auto Parts USA-FL(Auburndale) E-mail 1-800-551-8557

If it needs paint, it shouldn't be too much if you prep it yourself. Take the moldings out and everything, so all you have is the shell. Shop will hopefully paint it and blend it in cheap enough that you'll be able to pocket some cash for your troubles.

btw, if you have to rent a car, of course negotiate that part in also.

If you don't have a police report or some other evidence that he hit your car, you might get zero dollars from him. When my car got rear ended last year, the lady driving the van admitted fault to me and the police officer that investigated the accident. I got all of her insurance info and called them. They sent out an estimator and within a few days I had my check for the repairs. I would never trust anybody that said they would pay me the money unless they gave it to me on the spot. I hope you get something from him besides his word. Good luck. Hopefully you can find a exact match for your door at a salvage yard. If you take it to a body shop they will want to blend the new paint into other parts of your car which would include the quarter panel and the front door. When I got my car fixed, I bought the parts from the dealer, had them paint the bumper cover and installed the parts myself. I had $175 left after that.

Funny thing is, although everyone says get a new door I will risk getting punched at by saying that one would have to see the door up close to find out

A new door is nice and better business for a shop that can milk him for hitting you, but not always necessary.. in this case it looks like just the skin anyways, not the entire shell, but again - you gotta see it in person to find that part out (and I think I'm too far for an opinion lol).

I just sold the rear clip off a 2k1 GLE for $1000, too bad about the timing and your location or I could have passed it on to you (by rear clip, I mean everything from the b-pillar and back )

So did you get a police report?....I wouldnt trust anyone. Plus there could be hidden charges/damage that were not seen on the initial estimate. You outta think about washing the car or cleaning the outside as best as possible, snap a few pics, and take it to a handful of reputable body shops. And instead of receiving cash, go through the insurance company. You have to think, if anything goes wrong, its gonna end up coming outta your pocket. Plus, what about a rental while its in the shop? All in all, $1200 is not going to cover all that. Good luck to ya.

OK today i talked to him, and he is doing insurance. His insurance company is gonna send out someone in a couple of days to give me an estimate. The nissan dealer said, if i took it to him and the insurance company gave me a less estimate, he would talk to the ins. company and get them to raise up and get the rental for me. So i'll keep you guys updated, and take more pics.

My advise...............
I worked in a bodyshop for 2 months,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and dont let any @$$ hole try to sell you the Brooklyn bridge, by telling you he cn fix that !!!!!!!!!!!!! thats gone! get orrigonal,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but if you get aftermarket, you'll never know the differance!

Good luck and just be gr8full that it wasn't the local snowplow missjudging his plow!

The insurance adjustor will use the labor and material rates that some of your local paint and body shops use when doing your estimate. If the shop finds some hidden damages missed by the adjustor, they would contact them for additional money. You should ask the adjustor about the rental car when they look at your car. You have less wiggle room on the length of car rental since your car is still in driving condition. Since the damage to my car was minor, they would have only granted me one day rental. I would have had to pay out of pocket then seek reimbursement from the insurance company. I hope it works out well for you.

Sorry to see that, but this door would not be that hard to fix, some guy might tell you to change the door because it's easier to do but defenitely this door is repairable, the total labor would probably not exceed 8-10 hours.

I talked to the body shop couple of hours ago, he said he will keep the car for 4-5 days, and it was on the estimate print out he made me.
I told the dude's insurance company about the rental and they said they will work somthing out for me.

Gonna keep you guys updated. and i think they are going to repair the door. Not sure about replacing it. but o well, i just want my max to be like it was

i love my maxima and all your maximas. thanks for the advice. and imma take some new pics, clean the car and then send it in for repairs. then put up pics of how it came out. dont know when the car is going in for repairs tho. keep giving me feedback.

And i am greatful that my maxima wasnt totaled and no one got hurt !!!

With that type of damage i'm sure what they are gonna do is change the skin.grind around the edges peel off the old shell then bend the new one around the edges weld a couple of spots and it should look perfect when they are done no sweat, should be alot cheaper than getting a new door too.See if you can work something out with the shop (money in your pocket) If the guy that did it is gonna pay that first estimate that is.
