newbie question

i know this is a newbie question so please don't flame.

i had the oil changed two months ago when i bought a 2k2 max that was on the used car lot of a local ford dealership. (they changed the oil) a couple days ago my ses light came on. i found the error code to be p0021. i called the service department at a local nissan dealer and was told that it could be related to oil and the cam shaft position sensor. so i checked my oil level on the dipstick and noticed that it was all the way up to the second knuckle past the low and high markings on the dipstick. so i took it to one of those quick oil change spots during lunch so they could change the oil, because i heard that having too much oil is just as bad as not having enough. the guy there tells me that the level is fine. needless to say i did not have him change the oil. hell, he doesn't know how to read a dipstick.

i have been checking the oil level on dipsticks for years, so i know that it was over filled.

my only question is could i damage the engine by having too much oil in it?

thanks fo your help

If you have WAY to much in there yeah...

I cannot remember the term for it, but gets mixed with air and becomes useless. I was at my brothers shop one day and this chick came in and told my brother; "I checked the oil, when I took that cap (oil fill cap that is) off I could not see any, so I just put a bunch in. Now it runs really funny".

My brother did everything he could to try to stop laughing... He drained ALL the oil, put the correct amount in and told her to sell the car.

PS- I would not worry about what is in yours. the Cam position sensor is a common problem on your car.

Thanks upstatemax for your reply.

I reset the ECU a few days ago and have only put about 30 miles on it. So far the light has not come back on. You say this is a common problem. Is it serious? Should I stop driving it until I take it to a mechanic to check it out?
