using 87 octane with timing advance 2deg

does anybody have the technical basis of why using regular 87 octane with a maxima that has timing advance two degrees can destroy the engine. i have heard this rumor on this board before and i cant see the tecnical explanation to support this. another thing, should idle be kept at factory setting once timing advance has been performed

On my 'receipt' it states the owner agrees to use 91 or better.

People like you crack me up in how you will spend a small fortune on modifications but don't care enough to maintain your engine.

For reals, if you can't afford the price dif of 87 and 93, don't do the 17 degree advance.

....................

If he wants to go the opposite way of cheap, then use 94 octane from sunoco. (I think they carry it).

Yes - Ive seen sunoco with a 95 grade ultimate... not race gas. They have a 96 and 98 octane race gasoline... something like 5 bucks per galon.

From what I have seen, the 94 octane from sunoco is not worth it. Sunoco gasoline is not as clean as brands such as Shell and Mobil/Exxon. Cleaner gasonline will have as much of an effect on throttle response and acceleration even more so than a 1 octane boost.

I use.........

I use Getty, because I got their card when I had a Peugeot 505 turbo diesel.

I also saw a gas station in my neighborhood that has Cam2 100 octane race gas for about $6.

Can you link me to something that explanes the 17 degree timing change?

Advanced timing = gas mixture in chamber begins to ignite earlier. Any gas that is not burned will detonate if the gas octane is not high enough. Therefore you'll get pinging. Anytime you have detonation it causes sudden pressure spikes and very sharp thermal gradients through the combustion chamber. This places extra stresses on the cylinder heads and block. Over time, it will damage the engine.

If you're to cheap to by 91 or higher, sell your car.

Over here, 3.54/gal--> 100 octane.

It didn't go up nor down during our gasoline roller coaster last summer. I was paying 3.39 for 91 when 100 was 3.54.

I put about 30 dollars worth of 100 octane "76" Racing gas in my tank along with NOS RACE octane booster which is supposed to bring up the effective octane rating up by 7 points. I tend to do this every once in a while, it doesn't do anything for performance really- but it does make the car run BUTTER smooth. NOS formula also cleans out the injectors as its not only a octane booster, but also a injector cleaner in one. 100 Octane stuff was like 5.89 a gallon few months ago, I need to run some of that through my tank once it gets a lil warmer.

Do not use 87 octane gasoline period. Personally I conducted a lil test on my 00 Altima, and that car will get approx 50-70 miles MORE on a tank of gas when driven under the same conditions over a long distance trip- using 93 octane Mobil/Exxon gasoline. My timing is advanced on my Altima also, and in the summer it tends to ping whenever a gasoline station rips me off- selling 87 as 93 octane.

I run 87 in the winter and have never once heard the car ping. I can't getter anywhere near to WOT runs with the snow tires on anyway. If I was in a warmer climate I would use higher octane. I use 91 in the summer and get the 2000 rpm ping.

I understand that. The nube was asking a question so I provided it. To be honest I find it more frustrating to *****/complain about repost questions and/or read other people's *****/complain posts than to actually answer the question.

I run 91-93 nonstop and have never had any ping/knock issues, except for when I blew a coil. I just don't want to chance it. I never know when the urge hits me for spirited driving. What's $.20? IB4itaddsup

As you probably know, lots of people on the org have had pinging issues with the VQ35, even those who run premium year round. I cannot attribute the 87 I use in the winter to the light pinging i get in the summer when the car is running on premium.

You're right; it's a different engine.
