The HOW-TO stick is absolutley useless!!!!! (rant)

Is completley fkucing useless. It's a graveyard of old, dead links to commonly asked questions. How the hell does anyone expect common questions from being asked repeatedly when all the sticky is is a plethora of dead links?! Open the thread back, up properly link the damn articles. This is absolutley insane!!!

Its impossible to do anything on those How tos you got a point on the fact that alot people ask questions that could be awnsered on the How To's but can't be since it is a Cementary for Links (bunch of dead links lol)

Alright, what I am going to do is make a NEW how-to thread, gimme a couple of days to start compiling links. No one has taken the reigns of this yet, so I will be happy to oblige. I am going to need everyone's help, so let's all work together on this and make it great!!!!

When I tell people to "read the stickeys" I'm also implying them to donate and have the ability to search. If you can search you will NO DOUBT find what you are looking for. That's my 2cts.

I hear you, Dan.

Thanks, brotha!

I have an idea of how I am going to organize this, so I have a feeling it's going to be a rock-solid thread. I am the TS16949 (under the IS-9001 umbrella) auditor for our chemical plant, and I'm VERY **** with respect to useability/cleanliness of a document...I intend on taking the same approach here.

I am going to categorize it as follows:

EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS
SUSPENSION / BRAKES
ENGINE / TRANSMISSION / INTAKE & EXHUAST
ALL LIGHTING
ICE (In-Car-Electronics)

The categories will have direct links unlike the original HOW-TO thread, which I feel is far too large to be useful...I, and I am sure many of my fellow 5th gen breathern, run out of patience when searching the thread.

If anyone would like to see any additional categories, please chime in!!!

Totally agree with ya, Sam. But it's going to be ALOT more useful to simply click on a link to directly find what you need as opposed to sifting through nuermous threads that lead to nowheresville

I completely agree. Do you have a specific plan on how to populate the list of frequently asked questions? Because if the current faq has that many dead links it probably doesn't have a lot of other information that has come up since its last update.

I will certainly provide any information that I can for the faq's, and if you need any space to host pictures I have my own server as well that is currently not in use. I'll give you access information if you want to load stuff up to the server.

You should post a link in the feedback/suggestion forum. Maybe get some attention. Thanks for taking the initiative though.

Metal, if you want and if the authors are fine you can permantly use my webspace to post/host current and future write-ups as I have unlimited space and bandwidth. That way we don't have some problems with links not working in the future due to servers going down and stuffz...

Many links in how-to section don't work becuase someone used a server somewhere else... It was cool at the time but eventually it got lost in cyberspace...

While that may indeed be the case, the thread should at least be reopened to remove/add material as it is lost/become available.

Additionally, I feel as though it would be a huge benifit to members to have the intormation divided categorically as opposed to alphabetically.

If I need any assistance in hosting HOW-TOs, those whom have offered their services will be asked upon such demand.

Sorry, but that can lead us right back where we are right now. I would suggest asking Doug to find a place on this server to host them. IMO, regardless of who's feelings may be hurt.

I agree. It is not my intention to mar the legacy of those whom have origtinated the sticky, but there it does not serve anyone any benifit whatsoever to page through an obsolete thread.

I will Pm Doug before I post anything, but I am not even going to act upon this until next week.

I would not worry about the legacy of the stickie. IMO, creating a new thread with the proper working links to replace the existing would be the best method. It's not like you can edit the existing thread to fix it anyway.

Oh really? Such insight. Where is Kev? Maybe you should go track him down.

The only people who can update the existing locked thread are 5th gen mods, Super Mods (if any), and Admins.

Great idea, thanks for doing this- the How-to right now is pretty good (if everything worked) but the new one should have a lot of the semi-newbie stuff there too, the ones who know enough about which fluids to use, where to get parts etc but just dont have experience like some other members do. Information like how much things cost like different exhaust setups and lighting kits, body kits and such. Also should be how difficult things are to DIY, depending on your experience.

Pictures also help too, like when i first joined i kept seeing threads on DDE's and didnt know what they were, just some kind of light kit, later found out about it through old threads and members cardomain sites.

Problems with the car is another that helps, since I see a lot of new threads about the same topics that people get mad at, like a section on how popular the MAF, ignition coils, stereo rattle and VIAS problems are, where to get parts and different options to fix.

Maybe we could find out if Housecor will host selected how-tos on his site. He already has some really useful ones up there, so we know he doesn't mind sharing how-tos with the Maxima community. I don't know what kind of hosting restrictions he might have, but it's worth a shot, no?
