How important is trans fluid type?

Mine is pretty dingy. Time to change it.

The manual indicates some Nissan Brand stuff that I can obviously get from the dealer. Dex III okay like most cars?

EXTREMELY imporatant. I just changed my fluid to AMSOIL GL-4, tranny has never run as smoother as id does now, even in cold weather. Check the GD section for a great price!

FWIW, I switched mine to some off-the-shelf Dex III (maybe Valvoline?). It seems fine, no problems.

Metal, it does make that much of a difference? I just bought 5 quarts from the GD should be in next week, how hard was the change, any tips? Holds 4 and a half right?

Peice o' cake. YES, it makes that much of a difference, you tranny will love you for it and you will LOVE how smooth the shifts become. The change was not hard, do you know how to do it?

that's absolutely not possible... nissan oem atf (even it's called somthng like maticD) = dexron III. how can it slip. what about redline atf - not oem, right - will it slip?

^^ correct...for autos it's not supposed to matter much. majority of dealerships use plain old dex III, usually pennzoil or some other brand, during your tranny services. i still haven't found one dealer that uses matic-d on their own and there's about ten different nissan dealers i can choose from within a ten mile radius.. i personally still use matic-d even though it's more expensive...i just feel better using it. once i change my valve body and install an ATF cooler i'll probably switch over to mobil 1 since it's the same price as matic-d

maybe your tranny was on the way to the Junkyard.. who knows. I changed the tranny fluid a long time ago, 26k miles ago "See sig" with Mobil 1 and so far the tranny is better than before...

I've heard that Matic D is Dextron III with a high amount of Friction Modifiers. I'd probably go with Matic D for a trans change (although it doesn't excite me to have to buy fluid fromt he dealer)

When did you guys have a flush done? Im at 57K on my 01 AE. I really want to get my AT flushed. So Amsoil is the best huh? How much fluid would I have to buy to do a complete flush and refill?

Not a doubt in my mind about this. I have used Redline MT90, the OEM stuff, and AMSOIL GL-4. Without a doubt, I will never use another tranny fluid for my vehicle, or my familiy's vehicles.

use of maticD by dealers is mostly limited to warranty works

I called the nissan dealer here and the parts man didn't know nissan made their own atf. He said they just use DexIII for all three lines at his store(nissan, hyundai, buick).

Sounds like there's plenty of opinions.

I have been using M1 for 25k miles, so far so good, shifts are smoother then that of OEM stuff. Mobil1 is at least as good if not better than its Amsoil counterpart in my book.

I used 12 quarts of Mobil 1 , dropped the pan , cleaned the screen and added a tranny cooler. In total it took about 4 hours by myself. Dont notice a huge difference if any at all but I do have peice of mind. BTW I followed the A/T flush in the How To section. FYI I have a 2001.
