tune up

I hear a lot of people talk about tune up's and obviously I'd do a tune up on time and most likely before recommended like belts and oil ect. But I was wondering, besides the weekend mechanics basic "tuneup" is there any tuning that you can do to the engine without like computers and stuff? I mean like real tuning. Not just a tuneup

The manual only has basic tuneup thats why I asked and purposely said NOT BASIC TUNEUP so that people would not just be like "it's in the manual" or Google. Apparently you didn't catch that though but thanks anyways
