help with tranny pan bolts, please

allright im changing my tranny fluid. I drop the pan and start to remove the filter/screen. There is one nut in there with all the bolts and it is just spinning on the bolt and will not come undone. Is this normal? what do i need to do to remove this dam thing. Thanks a lot.

You will have to stop the bolt from spinning so the nut gains some traction on it to come off. Hold it with your finger or push up on it with a small screwdriver or whatever you can improvise with, while working the nut off with a needle nose pliers or wrench. I've done it by pulling down on the screw with my fingernail too, if that is possible. If you can't get it off, I would not worry about it personally. I have yet to hear of anyone who has found a dirty screen on a Maxima when they pull it off. Mine was clean after 44K miles of use. Simply changing the fluid and cleaning out the pan is much more important and valuable than cleaning the screen.

Nissan specifies DexronIII/Mercon ATF as an alternative to their own Nissan brand, but not Mercon V. If you bought Mobil 1 ATF you will be okay as it is a multi vehicle fluid now, which is why is meets Mercon V specs in addition to DexIII/Mercon. Many folks have used it successfully in a Maxima. But if you bought some other Mercon V only ATF, don't use it.

allright thanks for the reply. all i have at home is dads tools and he dont have metric wrenches. All my tools are at the shop. I'll have to go find a 10mm wrench i guess. I purchased Mobil 1 ATF i figured it was Mercon V but i guess its multi vehicle. Thanks a lot. off to find a 10mm wrench.

Yeah, Nissan uses a lot of 10mm nuts and bolts.

Just a couple other tips, if I'm not too late: Unlike the tranny pan, many of the bolts on the filter screen are different sizes. Very frustrating. I found it MUCH, MUCH easier to remember which way they went BACK IN by laying them out in a row as I took them off. Identify which hole one of the bolts goes in and simply reinstall the rest in the order after that bolt as they are laid out.

Measure, if you can, the old fluid you take out and refill with the same amount. I used two milk jugs. Its a lot easier than constantly checking the dip stick to see if the fluid is between the hot or cold marks as you refill.

The pan bolts only torque to about 19 or 20 ft pounds as I recall. That's not a lot. So be careful not to over tighten.

I found a Bud Light especially satifying when the job is done.
