New to the 5. Gen

:attention, everyone! I'm the proud new owner a 2000 se with 128xxx miles, 5 spd of course . my daily driver will be on a short leave of absence while I get familiarized with the newnew. I've been reading alot in the FAQ's and came across a few disturbing threads: bad coil packs, warped rotors, and my least favorite, malfunctioning VAIS. what got me really nervous is that the CEL was on during the test drive. The dealership OBDII scan revealed a bad coil pack on cylinder 2, which was replaced for free, CEL gone. Tomorrow will be my first day with the car home to do my more thorough checks/tests. I plan on changing my oil even though it still has about 2000 useable miles in it. I want to go full synthetic: good or bad. dealer suggested GTX high mileage. any further suggestion will be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the 5th gen forum muahahah ahahahaha lol, good luck with the car great choice. As on the oil use mobil 1 its the best. You should change it cause who knows if the dealership uhmm sorry stealership really changed it or not. The first oil change you should do half regular half synthetic, first two i mean.

Congrats on the 5th gen!

Hopefully no more codes pop up. I wouldnt worry about what you read in the faqs, be aware and prepaired if something happends but until it does, enjoy the ride.

half sythn, next 2 oil changes, then full sythn.

FWIW the first thing I did to my '00 SE was an oil change... even though it didn't need one. I am picky as hell on what goes in my engine/s and who knows what the last one was... Probably some cheap *** filter and Penzoil... Penzoil is as bad of an oil as Fram is a bad filter (IMHO of course)
And I would NOT do a blend for first two changes... I would do 2.5qts syn (Mobil 1) and 2 qts Castrol GTX (both 5W30) on first change BUT With a good filter! (Purolator Pure One for instance... or OEM Nissan filter) Rememnber, if it says Fram... it's a scam! I wouldn't put a Fram filter in my ex wife's lawnmower!

Then on oil change #2 go to 3qts Mobil 1 and 1.5 GTX (5W30) or just go to full syn Mobil 1 on number two... and don't sucker into the Mobil 1 filter... see this great article on filters

The "Nissan name" for the color of your car is Satin Blue Pearl and is a 2k/2k1 only color.

Watch out for:
- Coil packs
- MAF
- brake pad material xfer to rotors --> acts like warped rotors

I would suggest NAPA filters (made by Wix) and make a gradual swtich over to synth as suggested. I have used Mobil 1 or Shell Rotella T Synth in the Max since 5000 miles.

Welcome!
Travis

the color name came from some of my daughters crayons Satin Blue Pearl does sound more Maximaish . anyways, much thanks everyone . one thing though. while driving, as I hit the gas and accelerate, there is a slight whining noise coming from the fore section of the car. can't really tell if it's the transaxle or engine . it appears only when I hit the gas while moving, regardless of what gear it's in. if engine braking or coasting in neutral, no sound. only when gas is pressed while moving. familliar with this or not?

Check your belts or better yet replace them all

oh sh*t, thanks for the info link. I think my 2nd gen deserves an apology and a kiss from me, because I've been using a Fram filter since my purchase. At EVERY startup once completely cooled, or a long run on the xpressway my valvetrain ticks for a few minutes. More so even when the oil was just changed, which I've been doing religiously on or before 3k miles. I presumed it was just the mileage (180xxx) the engine had. < I really deserve one!
